Sculpture is a perfect medium for Susan’s expression of her love of people in portrait and figurative sculpture. Sculpting people offers endless subject matter whether it is portrait or figurative. Join Susan and explore these possibilities. No experience is necessary, only a desire to work in clay. We will work with a live model although personal photographs are welcome. Our goal with the portrait sculpture is to learn to attain a likeness of our subject in clay. The focus of the figurative sculpture is working with a live model and building an armature. We will then work with proportions of the human body and the expressive qualities of gestures. The intention of this workshop is to enjoy the process while producing a sculpture.

Instructor -- Susan Henningsen
Susan Henningsen received a BFA from Arizona State University and has continued her studies in art at Scottsdale Community College and Scottsdale Artists’ School where she has attended workshops by noted sculptors. She has been an instructor at Scottsdale Artists’ School since the early 1990s. She was also an art teacher in Phoenix for many years. Henningsen creates in clay and bronze with a focus on portrait and figurative sculpture. Henningsen’s larger-than-life sculpture of United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was installed in 2002 at the Sandra Day O’Connor United States Court House in Phoenix, AZ.

Required supplies for this program:
  • Water-based clay---25 lb. Bag, CONE .06 (no red or terra cotta colored clay). Clay may be purchased at Scottsdale Artists’ School .
  • You may use oil-based clay for this. My preference is water-based clay.
  • If you are using water-based clay, you will also need: Spray bottle for water; Old towel or material such as knit or flannel. (The material is needed to keep the sculpture moist while sculpting.); Masking tape; Large trash bag with a twisty
  • Sculpture tools: Simple assortment of sculpture tools---note photo of tools to be mailed to you. A sculpture tool kit, other sculpture tools and oil-based clay are available for purchase from Ball Consulting, LTD, if desired. The tool kit includes the tools pictured in the photograph.
  • DO NOT PURCHASE A TOOL KIT THAT IS DESIGNED FOR POTTERY, AS ONLY ONE, MAYBE TWO TOOLS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THIS KIND OF SCULPTURE.
  • Armature for portrait sculpture---will be available at the cost of $8.00 from Susan Henningsen or you may bring your own.
  • Figurative Sculpture: There is no need for different tools but you will need Oil-Based clay and an armature for the figure.
  • FIGURATIVE ARMATURE----15” or 18”
  • OIL-BASED CLAY---10 lbs.
  • The type of oil-based clay individual preference. I prefer JMAC tan or chocolate clay-MEDIUM hardness; TAN=#2AB-225; CHOCOLATE=#2AB-210. There are other clays but these are very workable and soften easily.
  • 1 small box lined with aluminum foil
  • 1 utility lamp with a 40watt bulb. These are available at hardware stores. Aluminum foil
  • FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE: My suggestion is that you decide on the portrait or the figure to sculpt at first. You are most welcome to work on which ever you choose. The idea is not to have to bring so much with you at one time. I look forward to seeing you. Susan
