This workshop is about creating a portrait head, based not only on sole anatomical structure, but also on going beyond structure into modeling. Students will learn techniques for rendering pathos and expression along with an “elusive” likeness. Students will examine what characteristics to look for and to accentuate, and conversely those, which should be down played or subdued. The first half of the class will be dedicated to the portrait in the round, while the second half will focus on the portrait in relief. The portrait in the round will be from a life model, and the bas-relief portrait will be from a photo or photos of the student’s choice. The instructor will also discuss how to select the most suitable photos for bas-relief portraiture.
  • Oil or Water-based clay

Instructor -- Eugene Daub
Eugene Daub studied at University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts, and Alfred University in New York. He won the Arthur Ross Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America, and has received awards in figurative and bas-relief sculpture from the American Numismatic Society and the American Numismatic Association. Institutions collecting his work include the British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.

Required supplies for this program:
  • Students may wish to work from a photograph of their choice. This may be a portrait, still life, or landscape. It’s important that photos are large enough and of a high quality. (no fuzzy snapshots). The subject (portrait) should be lit well and appropriately to reveal information about the structure of the face and head. Try several types of lighting; soft light, harsh light, different angles (use a tripod). You will need to bring an 8” x 10” print or prints to class. This may be an enlarged photo copy from a smaller print. ¾ and side views are most appropriate for bas-relief. Smiles with teeth showing can be problematic. Students may work from a photo or from the live model or both.
  • CLAY: 10 LBS. Water-based, fine grog
  • BOARDS: (2) 12” x 14” & (2) 16” x 24” (sizes are not critical)
  • **Water-based Clay and boards should be ½” or ¾” thick plywood.
  • Various sizes available for purchase at the school.**
