In this workshop the student will have the chance to work either from the model in a vignette, or from still life set-up. Nancy will begin the week with a figure demo on Monday morning, and then do a still life demo on Wednesday morning. Known for her beautiful set ups, there will be plenty to choose from throughout the week in both genres. Through these inspiring subjects the lessons of composition, form, value, edges, paint quality, subtlety, and personal interpretation will be ongoing topics. Demonstrations, discussions, personal instruction and FUN are also very important aspects of the class.

Instructor -- Nancy Chaboun
Nancy Chaboun studied painting and drawing at Arizona State University, the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Scottsdale Artists’ School. She states, “Learning from, and working with other artists in the workshop atmosphere has made the greatest impact on my paintings.” Galleries in Scottsdale, Santa Fe and Boston represent Chaboun, and her work is in collections in both the United States and Europe. Required supplies for this program:
  • Please bring what you are accustomed to using, however, make sure the paints are not student grade. As a guideline my palette includes: White (Titanium or Flake), Naples Yellow, Mars Yellow or Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Permanent Rose or Thalo Red Rose, Burnt Sienna, Raw umber, Ultramarine Blue Dark, Thalo Blue, Sap Green, Viridian or Thalo Green, Alizarin Crimson and Black. In addition I sometimes use: Mars Orange, Mars Violet, Holbein Monochrome Tint Warm, and Holbein Grey of Greys, and any other color that may appeal to me at the time (They tempt me like candy sometimes). I rarely have all these colors on my palette at one time. I have different needs depending on the subject matter. I am not suggesting that you buy all these colors by any means, but having a complete palette (a warm and cool of each primary, along with some neutrals) of the best quality paint will make your life easier.
  • Bristle Brushes- I use filberts- in a variety of sizes
  • Palette Knife
  • Toned Palette
  • Painting medium- I use either linseed oil, liquin or maroger
  • A variety of canvas sizes, I generally work small, but use what you are comfortable with.
  • We will do a different setup every day, so this may be a consideration.
