In this portrait painting workshop, students will paint from the live model and search for relationships of color and drawing (form). More importantly, students will seek to understand themselves in relation to what they are painting and be “painters in the moment.” Frantzen will help students see what is needed to heighten their sensitivity when painting from, and in, life. Students will explore what questions they can consider as they translate what they see to canvas. Each student’s solution will vary as the class learns and discovers together. The workshop will include a full day of demonstration on Monday, a palette demo later in the week, and a lot of individual attention throughout the workshop.

Required supplies for this program:
  • Canvas: For some attendees this may be a week of 2 or three paintings. I recommend a stretched canvas or Gessoboard by Ampersand (www.ampersand.com) sizes of a least 16"x 20" to 18"x 24" (you may go larger but will have to be in back or off to the side so others may see). I will most likely be working in this range. I understand that some tape or staple their canvases to a board. This is okay for the head study but not recommended for a longer pose. I will be using Rix Double-Primed linen by Fredrix. Utrecht sells Clausen's Belgian linen in 3yd rolls. I use stock no. 44713, which is their portrait weave. Their medium textured (44712??) weave is also good If the attendee has a favorite working surface other than these, they should use it. I also know some like to work small, and, if this is set in stone, you can do so, though, I really wish for people to try something a little larger. (It may also be prudent to bring a third canvas and definitely a small sketchbook with preferred sketching medium. My paint/palette should be cover whatever subject we find ourselves in front of) Please do not tone your canvas before arriving unless you are absolutely adamant about working this way. I work on white canvas and tone it specifically for the subject before me.
  • Medium: I will not be using any medium most likely, if the canvas is really dry I may use a linseed oil, damar varnish, and odorless paint thinner combo. This is usually decided during the painting session.
  • Paints: (I DO NOT WANT YOU TO IMPOVERISH YOURSELF BUYING THIS PALETTE SO USE YOUR DISCRETION IF IT IS TOO MUCH YOU MAY WRITE TO ME WHAT YOU DO HAVE AND I WILL SEE WHAT ELSE YOU WILL NEED.) Only those with asterisk are my primary. Contact me at rosefrantzen@netscape .net I use numerous brands and colors. As for the palette I am currently using, it contains:*Titanium white (Norma by Schminke or Utrecht or Old Holland); Cadmium lemon (Rembrandt); *Cadmium yellow medium (Utrecht); Stil de Grain yellow (Rembrandt); Cadmium orange ( by any of the above); *Permanent red medium ( Rembrandt) or *cadmium red light (Utrecht though any brand will do); Permanent red violet (Rembrandt); *Alizarin Crimson (Utrecht); *Yellow ochre light (Rembrandt) or Norma; *Terre Rosa (Windsor Newton); *Transparent oxide red, yellow, brown, orange (all by Rembrandt); *Ivory black (Utrecht);Viridian (Utrecht or Gamblin); *Cobalt Blue (Norma or Utrecht); *Ultramarine Blue (Utrecht). * These colors are on my basic palette. I have been painting this spring with a five color palette: cad. Yellow Med. , Alizarin Crimson, Ivory Black, Viridian and Ultramarine Blue .
  • NOTE: If you think of yourself as rather inexperienced, I may want to work with you using a limited palette. This would allow for a softer ease into learning and working with oils. For this you will need the white, the black and a burnt sienna of any brand. To this we could add a slight bit more color… bring any red, yellow and blue with the former three and we will find our way.
  • Brushes: I use a variety of sizes in the following brands: (Again buy what you can or use what you have): Windsor Newton Rathbone filberts; Dick Blick Masterstroke ox-hare filberts; Dick Blick Masterstroke red-sable filberts; Rhenish Utrecht kolinsky red-sable; Langnickel royal sable
  • Palette: My palette is an 18"x 24" piece of 1/8" plexiglass with a neutral gray piece of cardboard taped to the underside of it. ( I use the back of a large sketch pad)
  • Thinner: If you are driving you can bring odorless paint thinner with you, I use Sunnyside Odorless PaintThinner (low-odor does not do the trick, and we do not wish to subject other attendees to any odor from thinner). Gam-sol made by Gamblin is another odorless thinner.
  • You will need some sort of can for brush cleaning. I use a small coffee can with chicken-wire bent to fit the bottom. I use Viva paper towels.
  • Looking forward to seeing you, Rose
