Using his Style Wheel as a way to understand a full spectrum of basic styles, Morris will begin the workshop with a slideshow and discussion of the ways of seeing and working. Historic and contemporary uses of the basic styles will be explored, followed by discussion of the ways any one of the basic styles can be altered by the many choices an artist makes in terms of materials, refinement, edge quality, color, saturation, contrast, and value.
Before the workshop, attendees will be asked to bring one object that they would like to use as reference for multiple drawings or paintings that will each employ a different basic style. During the afternoon of the first day, attendees will select points on the Style Wheel for each piece that they plan to create. They will also consider the direction and materials as mentioned above, so they have a clear plan for each piece. Over the following three days, as they create these pieces, Morris will help each artist to stay consistent with the stylistic goals that they have set for themselves. During the afternoon of the fourth day, Morris will present a slideshow and discussion about works of art that juxtapose or integrate multiple basic styles. Morris will then help attendees make plans for such a piece and clearly define how the styles will interact. On the last day, the artists will set to work on the new piece, using their original object and/or any other object or image as reference. Rose Frantzen will assist in the class, helping attendees in exploration of art styles.
