In this workshop, students will learn techniques in painting the effects of light in various situations and subject matter along with creating strong and powerful paintings. Throughout the week, participants will gain confidence in developing technique and painting skills along with discovering and revisiting basics in art. How to achieve dynamic effects in painting using spontaneous, brushwork will be demonstrated daily through painting the landscape, still life, and architectural subject. Color relationships, values, edges, temperature of light and shadow in painting will be discussed as well as the application of value sketches, atmospheric and linear perspective. Let’s discover the “how to’s” of producing great paintings with sound design and composition through the massing and organization of darks and lights along with focusing on the spirit of each painting. Students will experience exciting painting techniques and methods of understanding light; develop a personal style in artistic approaches and gain inspiration and enthusiasm for future paintings. A fantastic time will be had by all!
Instructor -- Betty Carr
Betty Carr received her MFA from San Jose State University and has taught painting and sculpture for many years. As a professional artist throughout her distinguished career she has traveled extensively gathering inspirational subject matter. Carr is the author of acclaimed instructional book, Seeing the Light: An Artist’s Guide, and her work featured in numerous books including: Creative Composition & Design; The Painter’s Workshop; Splash 5; Painter’s Quick Reference; Flowers; Landscapes, and Flower Pocket Pal. Carr is a signature member of Knickerbocker Society of Artists and Arizona Plein Air Painters.
- Paints: Alizarin Crimson; Antwerp Blue; Burnt Sienna; Raw Sienna, Permanent Rose, Winsor Red; Cobalt Blue; Maganese Blue; Cad Orange; Indian Yellow (Holbein); Cad Yellow Lt.; Viridian; Cobalt Blue Hue (Holbein); Copper Kettle (American Journey); Quin Burnt Orange (Daniel Smith); Opaque White (Favorite Brand); Cad Scarlet; Sap Green. Feel free to choose your favorite brands
- Palette: Rober Wood, Pike, Cheap Joe's - the larger the better
- Paper: D'Arches 140lb Cold Press, D'Arches watercolor blocks are fine; 14 x 20 or larger. Sketchbook for preliminary value studies. 300lb D'Arches can also be used.
- Watercolor Board: Watercolor Board, Gator Board, Foam Core (double thick) for stretching watercolor paper. Suggestion-bring two boards.
- Pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, etc.
- Erasers: Gum, Pink, Pearl, Magic Rub, etc.
- Brushes: Incorporate your favorite, preferably larger rounds, #8, #10, #12, etc. Also a couple smaller round and flat brushes for details. 1" - 1/2" Flats for washes. Pallete knife for scratching detail and textural work, small fritch (Cheap Joe's) or short, small, stiff brush to lift edges and lights.
- Misc: Liquid Frisket, spray bottle, paper towels, salt, sponge, rubber cement pick-up, masking tape, baby toothbrush, small bar of soap. Bring an easel if your preer to work on it, or use one of the school's easels.
