This course will deal with the concepts and methods of observing the landscape and capturing it in sketches and field studies, and developing those studies into finished paintings in the studio. Keen observation, accurate drawing, and developing the visual memory will be emphasized. The group will work on location and in the studio. Portable painting equipment and transportation are required. This course is designed for intermediate and advanced painters.

Instructor -- Donald Demers
Donald Demers is nationally recognized for his landscapes and seascapes. Educated at the School of Worchester Art Museum, and Massachusetts College of Art, he divides his professional career between illustration and fine art. His painting technique and philosophy have been explained in books including “Marine Painting, Yachts on Canvas, and Marine Painting Techniques of Modern Masters. Donald is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists. www.donalddemers.com

Required supplies for this program:
  • Pochade Box, French Easel or some other kind of portable painting equipment.
  • Small painting supports whether mounted canvas, linen or panels. Sizes should be 6x8s to 11x14 for the field. Mounted canvas, linen, panel or stretched canvas for the studio. Sizes should be 16x20 up to 18x24. All sizes are suggested by the instructor and are general approximations. Students can customize sizes to suit their interests.
  • Paints are student’s choice. Instructor suggests the following.
  • Cad Red Light; Cad Red Medium ; Alizarin Crimson; Cad Yellow Light or Lemon; Cad Yellow Medium; Yellow Ochre; Viridian; Cobalt Blue; Ultramarine Blue; Burnt Sienna
  • Optional colors suggested: Indian Red; Burnt Umber; Raw Sienna ; Prussian Blue
  • A variety of bristle brushes large to small (student’s choice of type and style)
  • Small drawing pad and pencils or charcoal
  • View finder, either handmade or manufactured (this is important)
