In this workshop we will work with our hands and get a little dusty while we learn the basics of carving stone. Students will be instructed on techniques for identifying, cutting, chiseling, texturing, and polishing soft stones, as well as different kinds of marble. There will be demonstrations for using both hand and power tools and pneumatic chisels. Students may select a subject of their own interest, such as an animal or the figure, and will learn how to approach their subjects through the use of preliminary sketches in conte crayon, oil-based clay models, and photographic references. Each student will receive one on one instruction and critique.
