This workshop focuses on creating fun and interesting compositions using the rose as our primary subject. The week will begin with rose studies, concentrating on strong composition using real flowers. Students will examine the structure of a rose and the interplay of light upon the petals, stems and leaves. Using real flowers in still life set ups, students will learn how to mix close values, and how and where to use the palette knife. The workshop will conclude with the opportunity for students to introduce other objects into the composition of their paintings.

- At least a yard oil or lead primed canvas or canvas panels. Please use a smooth type (portrait) linen canvas. No cotton canvas or cotton panels. Bring your panels or canvas because you won’t be able to get suitable ones at the school. The best canvas boards that I know of are here: http://www.windriverarts.com/canvas_boards.htm I particularly like L600, NL219 and C13DP. I suggest that you use something other than cotton since cotton limits what you can do with transparent washes, palette knife work, etc. There are varieties of linen primed canvas that work well. If you are using canvas not mounted to a board bring a panel, masking tape and scissors so you can tape down what you need.
- Odorless mineral spirits, must be either Mona Lisa or Gamblin’s Gamsol brands.
- Two containers for mineral spirits. A can with a screen in the bottom is fine, it doesn’t have to be fancy but one of them should be large enough to clean your brushes, a small coffee can or a large tomato can…..something around that size. The other container can be smaller. Bring enough mineral spirits. If it gets yucky, you’ll be asked to get fresh.
- Brushes - Bristle: 1 # 2 filbert; 1 # 6 filbert; 1 #8 filbert; 1 #10 flat; 1 # 6 flat; 1 fan
- Langnickle royal sable: #5590 series sizes 2, 4 and 6
-
- Sizes don’t have to be exact but the fan brush is a must and it must be Bristle or you’ll be limited as to what you can do. I recommend Robert Simmon’s Signet brushes for the filberts and the fan. The fan size should be a #6 or #8.
- You can find Langnickle Royal Sables at www.misterart.com You may find the bristle brushes there and www.dickblick.com
- Palette Knife: A diamond shaped about 2-½ “ long and ½” wide blade or similar. You can find one type that I use here: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-blue-comfort-grip-painting-knives/ and the item number is: 03103-1044
- A palette of your choice. Preferably one you can clean easily like glass or acrylic.
- Paper towels (Viva’s are best)
-
- Paints I use:
- Lefranc titanium white
- Rembrandt: Yellow Ochre Light; Cadmium Orange; Ultramarine Blue Deep; Transparent Oxide Yellow*; Cadmium Red Medium; Transparent Oxide Red*; Viridian*
-
- Winsor & Newton: Permanent Alizarin Crimson; Cadmium Yellow pale, med & deep; Cadmium red; Yellow ochre pale; Cobalt Blue
-
- *I recommend that you have Rembrandt Transparent Oxide Red, Viridian and Transparent oxide yellow because I use them a lot. You will also need a good quality Cadmium Orange, not hue. Brands of the other colors including Cadmium Orange or not important. I use both Rembrandt and Winsor & Newton.
