In this workshop, students will learn how to attain a fresh, spontaneous, and painterly feel to their art. We will concentrate on good composition (defining active vs. passive approaches), good drawing, interpretive brushwork, color harmony, exploring animal(s) as abstract shapes–working with backgrounds in unifying positive and negative form. This being done while remaining true to the realism and storytelling inherent in the western art genre. Beecham will lecture using his work to show his own approach to design and execution of a painting. Students will spend time working on a piece in class while the instructor answers questions and critiques. There will be a group critique that will be positive and encouraging, with a focus on finding solutions to areas of difficulty. We will have a good time while learning valuable skills.
- Instructor lecture demonstrations
- Individual, group critiques

- Disk or slides of work for critique (maximum of 5)
- Brushes: Along with student’s personal preference, please have several sizes of bristle flats and one small bristle round. The following are ones I use – order from www.misterart.com:
- a. Robert Simmons Signet 40R - #0
- b. Robert Simmons Signet 40F - #1, #3, #6, #8, #10
- Paint: Students should bring the paints they are comfortable with, but if they want to adjust to my palette, it is the following:
- a. cadmium yellow pale
- b. cadmium orange
- c. cadmium scarlet
- d. alizarin crimson
- e. magenta
- f. ultramarine blue
- g. pthalo blue
- h. manganese blue hue
- i. pthalo turquoise
- j. viridian
- k. permanent green light
- l. raw sienna
- m. quinacridone burnt orange (I can only find this at Daniel Smith art supply. I’ll have some if the students just want to try it). I love this color!
- Linen panels:
- a. 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” panels (at least two). I USE Sourcetek portrait linen panels www.canvaspanels.com. Students can make their own, stretch canvas or whatever – but I would like to see linen – not cotton duck canvas.
- Students may bring any work they are currently struggling with – along with reference. I will work with them on it.
- Any good reference they want to try in class. I will bring a supply of good photos also.
