Scott will begin the workshop with a discussion about bird anatomy, aerodynamics and achieving the illusion of movement of birds in flight. She will discuss the difference between a technically adequate piece of work and one with spirit and life. She will emphasize the value of lost and found edges and how good composition and an expressive surface convey a feeling of movement, rhythm, light and emotion. Students will learn the importance of assembling strong, meaningful shapes and how eliminating unimportant details can create the essence of the bird. Above all, movement, gesture, and anatomy are the focus.
  • Instruction includes building bird armatures.
  • Students will work from photography, drawings, taxidermy mounts and videotapes of birds in flight.
  • Concepts taught apply to any subject matter.
  • Painters welcome!

Required supplies for this program:
  • Clay – Chavant Le Beau Touche. Get the regular clay, not HM (high melt).
  • Clay warming devises, a metal bucket with a clamp on heat lamp or 100 W bulb works great.
  • Bailing or tie wire.
  • Aluminum foil.
  • Scissors.
  • Favorite sculpture tools.
  • Plank of wood (pine) approximately 8" x 8" x 2". Bring as many planks you wish...the wood is used as the base for your sculpture.
  • Plumber's pipe, 1/2" threaded: Bring several different lengths...up to 10"...not PVC pipe.
  • Plumber's pipe T joint, 1/2" or smaller, threaded
  • Plumber's pipe couplers, 1/2" or smaller, threaded
  • Plumber's pipe flange, 1/2" or smaller
  • Screws and screwdriver to secure flange to wood…this may be done before you arrive. (Place flange in center of plank)
  • Wire cutters
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Rubber mallet.
  • Spatula
  • Measuring devices such as ruler, measuring tape, dividers and calipers.
  • Because we concentrate on BIRDS IN FLIGHT, live models in the classroom are more distracting than useful. I will demonstrate the technique of constructing a cantilevered bird armature that can be used for many different bird species and will show you how to assemble shapes to capture the ”giss” of the specific bird.
  • Bird field guides such as Peterson, Stokes, Golden or Sibley. Sibley’s Guide to Birds (not Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior) is best if bringing only one field guide. This popular book can usually be purchased at any book store. Sibley’s Guide to Birds is the one Sandy recommends.
  • If you wish to purchase supplies from Ball Consulting, you must contact Ball directly, place the order, pay for it, and request to have it delivered to the school the Monday of the workshop. Ball Consulting will deliver Monday morning at 8 am, the first day of the workshop. Ball Consulting may be contacted at: 480-967-7727 or www.arizonasculpture.com
