The still life genre offers the student a great opportunity to learn many of the important aspects of creating a painting. How to describe form and light with paint is just the beginning, how to transcend the subject matter is a whole other ball of wax. The basics of painting: composition, values, edges and paint quality will be stressed. How to approach surfaces such as metal, glass, and porcelain will also be covered. Individual attention and fun will also be an important aspect of the class.

Instructor -- Nancy Chaboun
Nancy Chaboun studied painting and drawing at Arizona State University, the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Scottsdale Artists’ School. She states, “Learning from, and working with other artists in the workshop atmosphere has made the greatest impact on my paintings.” Galleries in Scottsdale, Santa Fe and Boston represent Chaboun, and her work is in collections in both the United States and Europe. Required supplies for this program:
  • Please bring what you are accustomed to using, however no “student grade” paints
  • As a guideline my palette includes: Titanium white, cad yell lemon, cad yellow med, cad orange, cad red light, permanent rose or thalo red rose, yellow ocher, burnt sienna, raw umber, old Holland violet grey, ultramarine blue dark, thalo blue, sap green, thalo green, alizarin crimson permanent, ivory black
  • In addition I sometimes use; Mars orange, mars violet, Holbein monochrome tint warm, terra rosa, venetian red, and Indian yellow.
  • I rarely have all these colors on my palette at one time. I have different needs depending on the subject matter. I am not suggesting that you buy all these colors by any means, but having a complete palette (a warm and cool of each primary, along with some neutrals) of the best quality paint will make your life easier.
  • Filbert Bristle brushes # 2-8, filbert mongoose brush, painting knife
  • Walnut alkyd oil, linseed oil or liquin. Turpenoid or Gamsol
  • A variety of canvas sizes, we will do a different set up every day, so this may be a consideration.
  • Camera
