3-D From the Inside Out: Developing Sculptural Form using Repousse
During this workshop, students will work in water-based clay using slabs of clay to build hollow sculptural forms suitable for firing in the kiln. We will use the repousse technique (a traditional metal working technique) of pressing and pushing out volumes from the back side of the slab. The clay comes to life, acting like skin as it stretches over your fingers pushing out the form from the inside out. We will begin with faces which can be displayed as wall masks and move on to torsos and larger forms either human or animal. Students will be encouraged to work loosely, focusing on responding expressively to the clay as it takes on form. You will also have a chance to learn about ceramic fired surfaces as we will apply underglazes to the masks and fire them for return on Friday. You may make arrangements to fire your other pieces after the workshop. www.janekelseymapel.com

A Grand Experience: Plein Air at the Canyon with Linda Glover Gooch
Painting the Grand Canyon in plein air is a grand experience, yet very challenging. This workshop requires hard work and dedication from each student. The course is designed to give the student complete focus on the canyon while learning what to select from the canyon’s expansive view. Helping students arrange pleasing compositions while creating the feel, mood and essence of the Canyon is the main goal. Careful consideration has been taken to select prime painting location suitable for this class. The daily schedule will be split into early morning and late afternoon painting sessions, with break time in-between. This will allow the students’ working hours to be during the richest and most dramatic times of day, while giving them some free time to explore the canyon. Demonstrations will also be used in the teaching process, as well as individual critiques and some lecture time. Some outdoor painting experience is required to take this class. There will be an orientation for students on Sunday, September 16th at 5pm to kick off the workshop. Students participating in this workshop will also have the added bonus of a lecture and walking tour with the Director of the Grand Canyon Field Institute, Mike Buchheit, who will help students get the most out their experience at the Canyon. Tuesday, September 18th, 1pm. During an easy walking tour along the South Rim, Mike Buchheit, longtime director of our host Grand Canyon Field Institute, will provide a natural and cultural history overview of Grand Canyon National Park. The discussion will include topics ranging from geology to archaeology, as well as a brief history of the arts at Grand Canyon. The setting for the latter will be the historic Kolb Studio, the one-time home and place of business for the famed photographers and filmmakers Emery and Ellsworth Kolb. Today Kolb Studio stands as one of the premier art venues in Grand Canyon Village.

Alla Prima Portrait Painting
Working from the model, students will explore the art of painting the portrait from life. This class is primarily about painting the head in a convincing, representational manner. Initially, emphasis will be placed on shape and tonal relationships. Students will have the chance to paint a number of simple two to three tone head studies, and then we will move into color relationships. The poses will gradually lengthen over the course of the weeks, as we begin to seek orchestration of shape, value, color, and edge. The related topics of composition and pictorial design will also be addressed. Students can expect instructor demonstrations, and plenty of individual attention. www.robertlemler.com

Alla Prima: Figure Painting in Oil
This workshop will be focused on how to use beautiful oil colors to paint from life models. Students will learn effective ways to paint human figures from 25 minute quick studies, to a one-day length session incorporating the Alla Prima approach. Class will start from a relatively simple, limited color palette for quick paintings, to full color palette for longer paintings. Different techniques will be demonstrated and practiced: such as premixing unique colors, matching the right values with expressive or exaggerated color temperatures, the application of various thin and thick brushworks, and more. www.henryyanart.com

An Approach to Figure Painting
Will paint a figure from life and discuss choices for setting up the pose, composition, color harmony, lighting, pacing, and bringing the painting to a decent level of resolve. We'll also discuss the language of describing paint in order to better understand our mixtures. Joseph will explain his approach to figure painting and demonstrate by painting along and illustrating his ideas about the approach. Previous drawing experience is highly recommended. www.onejoseph.com

Back to the Basics
This workshop will spend 2 days indoors and 2 days outdoors. Outdoors to work on developing outdoor painting skills and color sketches. Indoors to learn how work on design and composition. Painting indoors and out helps reinforce and compliment each painting situation: Outdoors to see what we need for back in the studio, In the studio to see what we need to look for outdoors. This will be comprehensive workshop for students of all levels, with a basic warm-up in the classroom, outdoor painting basics, and back to the studio to cover composition and reference materials. Students will be working from photos and sketches from outdoors with prints and/or laptops.

A camera will be used during at least one class. Water-media welcome. This is a good continuation class from Beginning Oil Painting with a focus on Realism. www.suzannefalk.com

Capturing the Drama of Charcoal Wash Portraits
Charcoal wash drawing is a way to create more drama and fun to your art experience. Adding charcoal wash to your artistic tool box will enable you to draw while experiencing the sensation of painting at the same time. Charcoal wash is simply powdered charcoal mixed with water and applied with a brush. It is a fast way to lay in broad dark patterns instantly while not sacrificing the beauty of expressive line-work. The student will work from both live models and photographs during the three hour sessions. The instructor will demonstrate the technique each week giving the student fresh impressions and reinforcement. You will be given individual assistance during each session. The technique is easy to learn and will bolster your desire and willingness to take chances and be a more creative artist. www.billlundquist.com

Creativity Expressed through Sculpture
The value of art is elusive, so how do artists increase the perceived value of their art? This workshop will answer many questions artists face: financial expenditure, galleries, creative and personal enjoyment, financial security, and how to combine distortion, abstraction, and realism to increase the power of there work just as Michelangelo and Rodin did. Anatomy, composition, negative space and understanding of form will be stressed. Besides creating a wonderful work of art in the class, the primary goal will be to analyze the intangible aspects of the creative process. although students will have the opportunity to work from a live model, they will be free to explore any subject, because the creative principles will remain constant, regardless of subject or direction. True creativity is reminiscent of childhood play, so plan to enjoy this week...I am. www.lincolnfox.com

Design Secrets of the Masters
As students we learn shapes, values, color temperature, edges, and ultimately, design. Design trumps all the rest! A painting with good composition but mediocre rendering will still fly off the wall. This workshop will focus on creating well-designed paintings that capture the viewer’s attention. Days 1 – 3 we will focus on design principles used by such masters as Rembrandt, Waterhouse, and Sargent, and contemporary greats like Gerhartz, Situ, and Terpning You will analyze masterworks and then immediately apply those principles in exercises. On days four and five you will develop a painting incorporating those elements. This five day oil and pastel workshop is for intermediate and advanced students. You will learn: • How to design with a dominant value • Andrew Loomis’ value structures • The Munsell color system to create an effective color harmony • Placement of key elements • Alphonse Mucha’s composition theories • Edgar Payne’s design “stems” • How to create drama in the finished piece • How to create a visual concept All the great painters learned by studying masterworks; this workshop will take your understanding to the next level. www.schneiderfineart.com

Discover a New Way of Seeing Color!
“Color that expresses the light key of nature can make any subject strikingly beautiful.” —Camille Przewodek This five-day workshop is an introduction to a way of painting outdoor light—capturing the time of day, the type of day, and learning to discern and express the subtle differences in the light keys of nature. Monday and Tuesday will be devoted to outdoor still life (crucial study that will prepare us to tackle the landscape). On Wednesday and Thursday we will be on location painting landscape studies. I will be teaching the structure of the landscape—what is important to include as well as what to leave out. On Friday we’ll do figure, and still life. Students are encouraged to bring original artwork or photos and talk about their vision as artists during the week. We will concentrate on the development of strong starts. I will focus on expressing the big masses, light key and aerial perspective with accurate color relationships. I will be doing demonstrations throughout the workshop (one in the morning and one in the afternoon). Students will be asked to paint and apply the principles covered in my demonstrations. www.przewodek.com

Discover and Develop Your Unique Painting Style
Each week Judith will demonstrate in oil and/or pastel, while identifying basic painting techniques such as shape, color, temperature, edges, composition and perspective in her own unique style of painting. With the use of photographs, Judith will impress on students the importance of painting what they SEE, not what they think they know. Students will learn to apply these techniques to build their own styles while improving their individual expertise. They will not only learn from the instructor but from each other in a highly charged, fun and motivational environment! Critiquing will clarify a student's understanding of strengths and weaknesses, in a completely POSITIVE learning setting. The critique is to further every student's understanding of progress and NEVER to impede that progress either for the student or for the class. Students will be encouraged to photograph their weekly painting progress. Group discussions, individual instruction, and question and answer periods will be part of the class. www.judithspitz.com

Drawing People Places and Things
Instructor Larry Charles takes the mystery out of drawing and sketching people, places and things with this six-session class at our North Valley studio classroom. Beginners and intermediate-level artists are welcome as this class shows the simplified steps to achieving life-like drawings. Charles demonstrates each technique, then provides individual attention to each student as they draw their way through still life set-ups, location scenes, and figures in a variety of poses. This class is ideal for those who up to now thought that drawing faces or vacation scenes was too challenging. www.realismguild.com

Drawing: The Painter's Foundation
Drawing has long been recognized as the most basic foundation for the paint¬er. The reason is simple: drawing teaches one to “see.” Seeing as an artist is different from seeing as a layman. An artist learns to read subtle information and make sense of it structurally. This includes wading through the plethora of optical illusions that mislead the eye if copied “as is.” McGraw will lead students through the skills and information that all good draftsmen should know, using the human nude figure as the guide. There will be individual critiques and some spon¬taneous class demonstrations, inspired by model and pose. McGraw will also demonstrate in the most traditional way – on students’ pads. Individual critiques. All levels are welcome. The only requirement is a willingness to learn. www.sherriemcgraw.com

Everything about Color: Concept, Perception, and Usage
It’s NEVER too early or too late to learn more about color! In this class, students will ex-plore color theory and color mixing. Students will learn about individual pigments, their place on the pallet, and paint transparency and opacity. The workshop will emphasize identifying the value, intensity, and temperature of color. Other topics addressed will include color perspective, concepts for creating the illusion of space, mixing techniques, the illusion of transparency, and mediums, including glazes, that create color effects. Most of the day will be spent seated at tables, in a hands-on learning experience mixing hypothetical color combinations and ranges. The goal of this workshop is the study of a practical way of developing and thinking about discovery and invention in color mixing. Students will acquire concepts to fill their color needs that eventually, through use, will become fluid and subconscious. www.susandiehl.com

Explore Your Medium
Your Choice! Do you love the soft texture of pastel? Do you wonder at the amazing color blends of watercolor? Are you challenged by working with acrylic or oil? This class will help you discover the medium of your choice. These mediums have different blending and application techniques. However, there are certain basic elements that are consistent with any beautiful piece of work. Points of interest in this class will be drawing, line, composition, perspective, color and light. How to capture color and light differs with your medium. In this class you will explore this by working from your favorite photos or still-lives that are set up in class. Join us, have fun and learn at the same time. www.amerybohling.com

Field to Studio
This workshop is open to oil painters who are already comfortable with their media, and have experience working outdoors. We will start with field work: gathering possible candidates to be used for larger paintings, followed by a few days of studio work enlarging the studies selected. There will be a demonstration to show my process from start to finish. Students should expect to get a good start on the final painting but may not finish it entirely. My goal is to get the student to see the value in creating accurate field work that can be used as a reference in the studio, to work up a concept from the field into a strong studio painting that has similarities to, but is not a copy of, the field work. We will use photography where necessary and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of using them together. Field and studio work. Critique, materials discussion and group conversation. www.marchansonart.com

Investigating the Modern Portrait
The focus of this course will be on advanced life painting and drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait. Students will work to develop a clarity of vision that is essential for accurate observation; learning to focus on what is in front of us without being overwhelmed. Through this intensive observation students will explore the uniqueness of individual features and their relationship to each other as part of a coherent whole. An emphasis will be on understanding the structure of the model, as well as the artist's analysis and interpretation. All questions will be answered both visually as well as verbally. The majority of this workshop's instruction will be one on one coaching, in order to help diagnose any stumbling blocks that they may have. Students will execute preliminary drawings before moving on to full-scale oil paintings. Instruction will include discussion of practical technical information on different paint qualities, pigments, palette, mediums, and paint supports. This will be an intensive painting practicum with a concentration on the artist in whole. Students will be challenged to develop a strong foundation from which to explore and evolve. www.davidkassan.com

iPad Portrait Demonstration and Lecture with Brooklyn artist David Jon Kassan
This will truly be a unique event. Artist David Jon Kassan will enlighten audiences using his latest method of artistic expression- the iPad. In this presentation, David will discuss how to use the iPad as an optimal presentation portfolio for galleries, collectors, and students; a full color sketchbook that allows you to “paint” or sketch virtually anywhere, and an innovative new artistic tool- he will do a live portrait demonstration using the painting programs on the iPad, which require you to use many of the same skills as when working in oil.

Landscape Painting

Lessons on Russian Colorist Painting
“Check your work with the rules, but paint what you see”. This workshop will show you the best way to paint and see color with the secret of Russian Impressionists painting by using the rules of color, values, and temperature. You will never look at painting the same way again. I will give a lecture and the rules of painting to give you a good start. We will work with still life, models, and landscape. There will be a lot of information given that will change your life in five days!

Life Drawing II
The simple, abstract beauty of line, when combined with accurate values and thoughtful edges, is one of the most beautiful mediums of human expression. The aim of this course will be to give students both a sound understanding of how to become an excellent draftsman, and time to practice doing what they learn. We will cover: 1. How to handle the medium of charcoal 2. Basic approaches, methods, and skills fundamental to drawing from life 3. What makes things (especially drawings) beautiful? The bulk of class time will be spent working from life. Class time will also include demonstrations by the instructor, and individual student critiques. The instructor WILL draw on student’s drawings... so no whining. www.joshclare.com

Light, Composition, Emotion: An Approach to Painting the Still Life in Watercolor
“Light is the first of painters. There is no object … that intense light will not make beautiful.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson “I am essentially a painter of the kind of still life com position that communicates a sense of tranquility and privacy, moods which I have always valued above all else.” – Georgio Morandi “ I do not literally paint that table but the emotion it produces upon me.” – Henri Matisse Based on these statements Ted will discuss and demonstrate his approach to painting the still life as well as using the camera as a tool to achieve and skillfully use the elements of light, composition and emotion in your work.

Long Pose Figure Drawing
Long Pose Figure Drawing is a unique experience for students to work side by side in the studio on a range of fundamental to advanced skills. With an initial series of short demonstrations, the instructor will layout a set of concerns which can be used for both short and long pose drawing: Gesture, via the line of action, linear relationships, triangulating measurement, and an armature of design. As the figure drawing materializes, students will be encouraged to layer additional insights into the piece: learning to see landmarks in the figure, using them to orient the body in space, developing alignment and symmetry, and fabricating a tonal map. In the later stage of the pose, students will learn how to organize detail by balancing the concerns of light direction, planar relationship, and rhythmic, organic surface form into an aesthetically pleasing result. www.danthompsonart.com

Make a Small Painting a Work of Art
In this class, everyone will set up a still life. I will assist and give advice as needed. Expect to hear me say, “Keep it simple”. A few or even some¬times one object painted beautifully is more compelling than a bunch of stuff crammed together. Expect to do studies. Learn to get a lot of prob¬lems out of the way so that the finish will be fun. Don’t expect to work on a painting for a long time, one day max. Every day we’ll start something fresh. Some days you might do more than one or do a few studies. I will spend some time painting each day because it’s easier to show than tell. I’ll show you how to start loose and finish with some great edge work. Some of the things that will be covered in this class; Setting up and lighting a still life, how and why to use a fan brush (don’t forget your fan brush!), how, why and where to use a palette knife (don’t forget your palette knife,) how to mix close values, how to start and finish a painting, how and why to squint, how to look for and paint shapes, how to paint white drapery, how to keep your darks clean and transparent and why you want to do that.. End of week critiques with suggestions of what you should concentrate on after you leave the class. Expect to work hard and take away the knowledge to do good paintings. www.jeanchambers.com

Making a Painting Work
A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept, to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting, without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony, and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Students should be prepared to work from their own photos and/or field studies. Starts, mistakes and failures could be the order of the day, but Mueller says, “We will make mistakes, work hard, and have a good time doing it!” www.nedmueller.com

Modeling the Horse from Life
Students will spend the week modeling a horse from life. Students will be taught to make a fast, effective armature that will give them the foundation to complete a clay model of a horse during the workshop. Rod will teach an accurate way of proporting based on his own method which he has successfully used to create award winning horse sculptures. Students can expect to complete a clay model during the week. Zullo’s methods, philosophies, and concepts will also be discussed. All students are welcome, from the beginner to advanced. This workshop will be primarily outdoors sculpting horses from life, both on SAS property, and on location (~30 minute drive). Transportation necessary. www.rodzullo.com

Oil Painting
Seeing with freshness, honesty and great clarity is a fundamental tool used to create powerful paintings. Johnson focuses on exploring these time-tested principles of painting in this inspiring workshop, which will stress the beauty of working with fresh oil paint. The class will paint from both models and still life arrangements. Johnson will teach careful observation and control of values, color and edges as a means of achieving realistic honesty in a painting, while preserving the magical and mysterious quality present in great works of art. The brush stroke itself will be emphasized as a means to depict form, achieve expressive power, and maintain a paintings freshness and life. www.robertjohnsonart.com

Oil Painting Clean and Simple
Howard Carr is considered a master of color and an outstanding teacher who emphasizes the simplicity of how a painting works and how to do it. Pure, clean luminous results in your landscapes and florals are taught step-by-step, from beginning to end, with daily demonstrations and individual instruction. Each day will begin with a question-and -answer session followed by a one-hour full painting demonstration. Students will spend the remainder of the day painting at their easel with personalized instruction. Monday will be focusing on floral still life, Tuesday and Wednesday will be landscape painting from photos. Instructor will demonstrate daily, and give individual critiques throughout the week.

Oil Painting: Portrait and Figure
This workshop explores the principles of sound painting by studying draw¬ing, values, edges, color and design. Lorusso pays particular attention to the technical aspects of painting with lectures on process and materials. Students will learn to selectively edit and incorporate sound design and composition in order to explore their personal artistic statements. Students will explore the essence of the figure while working from the live model, focusing initially on head studies, then working towards incorporating the entire figure in an envi¬ronment, conveying mood and atmosphere in the process. Students may also bring photographs to work from, and the instructor will demonstrate how les¬sons with the live model apply toward painting from photographs. www.josephlorussofineart.com

Oil Painting: Quick Sketch
English professes, “Immediacy is important not only because it is often the nature of people, but, for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint.” In this workshop, students will concentrate on developing their ability to paint quickly and accurately, a skill that can be useful in many situations. Students will work from models in natural situations (chatting, playing music, walking around, but not strictly “posed”) both indoors and outdoors. The goal of this workshop is not to create a finished painting, but numerous very quick, spontaneous, yet controlled studies. Many studies may even be wiped out during the day, as students practice their oil sketching technique.

Painting in the City, Plein Air
If you love historic architecture, urban landscapes and painting, this is the class for you! This urban adventure will examine slashing light, angular shadows, volume, depth, space, textures and more. The class is an exciting opportunity to explore traditional methods of painting in a city setting. After spending the first day in the studio, students will spend the remaining classes painting on location in various places around Scottsdale and downtown Phoenix. The instructor will give demonstrations in both oil and pastel. There will be an emphasis on composition, how light defines form, values, drawing, and other fundamental principles. We will also talk about seeing and how to see the amazing beauty that is right in front of our eyes. You truly get all this and more when you go into the city to paint. www.allengarns.com

Painting Landscapes from Photographs
Even if you prefer painting landscapes in plein aire, at some point you are going to use photographs as a reference, perhaps for the shape of a tree, the light on a canyon wall or the perfect color of a field of flowers. This class will help students explore some of the shortcom¬ings of photographs and how to translate the image in a photograph into information they can use in their paintings. The instructor will encourage students to paint along with him and take a painting from start to finish. Throughout this fun and non-intimidating class, the fundamentals of good painting will be emphasized. There will be step-by-step demonstrations, and the instructor will provide reference materials, or students may bring their own.

Painting Outdoors at Saguaro Lake Ranch Resort, Arizona
This workshop requires extended hours by the student. The typical daily schedule is shown below. The course is designed to fully immerse the student in the experience of landscape painting. The primary focus is working outdoors, however the methods of transforming field paintings into studio paintings will be studied in the on site studio building. The week includes painting, drawing and design exercises to help the student develop a fuller understanding of the demands of landscape painting, and also function as a process of self discovery. Idea, design, composition, draftsmanship, color, value and brush technique will be among the topics discussed, and demonstrated daily. This class is intended for advanced students only- this class is not suitable for inexperienced or beginning painters.

Painting Spring Florals
This workshop’s focus will be on Impressionistic still life painting, specifically spring florals such as daisies, roses, and sunflowers. Students will learn how to arrange the floral still life and develop set-up ideas using such flowers as subject matter. Emphasis will be on basic concepts of composition and the importance of transparent color lay in. Effective use of light and value to create vivid and lively paintings will also be covered, along with how to use soft and hard edges in and around the focal point.

Painting the Figure and Portrait
The workshop will focus on creating a figure painting from the early stages of set-up to the finishing strokes. Alongside Baugh, students will be working from models, while they are guided through various ways of handling the brush and paint in order to have full control over their painting. Baugh will also discuss his way of seeing value, drawing, edge and color, as well as composition, theory and design. The first day will cover set-up and preparation (composition, lighting, pose, etc), the next two days will cover starting a painting, and carrying through to the mid-stages, and the last day will be spent putting on the finishing touches. www.caseybaugh.com

Painting the Head: The Old Master’s Way
Learn the light and shadow approach to painting the head with luminosity and drama in this five day oil painting workshop. Students will work only from the live model, learning the principals that are used to build form, atmosphere and mood. Learn how to see objectively and understand how to quickly mass abstract shapes to create a realistic yet painterly portrait. Instructor demonstrations and individual attention. www.jefflegg.com

Painting the Model Indoors and Out
This class will offer the student the opportunity to work from the model both in the studio, under artificial light and outside in direct sunlight (on School property). Experienced painters understand the value of limiting the number of tones used to interpret the subject, which is what this class is all about. Working from the costumed model, students will seek to interpret the subject in a limited tonal range, using only four or five values. Guidance will be offered regarding drawing, color, and design. Please join me for this informative and enjoyable class! www.robertlemler.com

Painting the Portrait and Figure
This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet intense working environment. Romel will demonstrate daily on his approach to painting portrait & the figure from life, using his direct fluid painting style with heavy emphasis on the use of improving color, drawing skills, value relationships, understanding edges and capturing the "feeling" of light. Learn to use the elements that make a painting/drawing work and exciting: creative use of color & edges, visual movement, paint or charcoal application, distribution of abstract shapes and strong design. Students will also learn how to combine working from life and photographs to a finish piece. Romel provides easy-going individual instruction as well as critique and group discussion. Techniques of past great artists like Sargent, Zorn, Sorolla, etc. will also be discussed. Be prepared to work hard, make new friends and best of all - have fun. All levels are welcome. www.romeldelatorre.com

Painting with a Concept
Reasonably, most painters feel they have succeeded in their work when their paintings look convincingly like the subject. This is a notable feat. When students want more in their work, whether beginner or experienced, this class will explore the underlying qualities that imbue paint with something more than a competent image. When a painting compels the viewer to return to it repeatedly, the underlying reason is concept. Concept involves the specific use of paint, shapes, edges and color to move the viewer’s eyes through the painting. Rather than seeing each object as a separate entity, concept establishes a relationship between objects and builds something that is greater than the individual parts. This underlying visual message creates a beauty beyond subject matter and is the real reason behind the painting. There will be a portrait demonstration, as well as a still life demonstration, and individual attention will be given throughout the week. Students at all levels of development are welcome. www.sherriemcgraw.com

Painting: The Right Shape, the Right Color, the Right Value
My former teacher Dan McCaw used to say that all you need for a good painting is the right shapes with the right color and the right value. It is a simple but powerful idea. This class will focus on those fundamentals. You will learn to see shapes, simplify values and develop a stronger sense of color. Specific exercises will be combined with open painting of still life set-ups and costumed models that will be valuable for painters of all levels. I will do some general demonstrating, but most of the time you will be painting with individual attention tailored to your needs. Pastels and oils are welcome. www.allengarns.com

Photographing your Artwork: 2-D and 3-D
This class will be focused on lighting, metering and getting photographs to look like what you painted or sculpted with the use of studio lighting. Students will learn how to properly set up, light and take professional-quality digital photographs of their two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork. Students should bring a piece of artwork to photograph (frames ok, no glass). Students must have a digital camera that can be set for manual settings off program modes, a tripod, and their camera manual. Everyone will go home with one or two quality digital images that are appropriate to submit to juried shows. This evening workshop is designed for the intermediate photographer who knows how to manually set their DSLR camera settings. (Note: This is not a basic photography class.) A tripod is required. Class Limited to 8 students. www.cavecreek-photo.com

Plein Air Painting in Grand Teton National Park with John Hughes
This workshop will take place in the beautiful Grand Teton National Park, just outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The format for this class will incorporate both morning and afternoon painting sessions, to take advantage of different lighting situations. There will be daily demonstrations by the instructor as well as one-on-one instruction out in the field. The emphasis will be drawing, color, value, edges and brushwork, in order to create a competent painting on location in a painterly fashion. The workshop will kick off with a short orientation meeting on Tuesday afternoon. There will be an optional evening painting session for those who wish to continue painting past the typical workshop hours. This class is suitable for all levels, but some experience color mixing out of doors is required. I look forward to a great workshop this year in some really fine painting locations that will feature mountain and river scenes in this historic National Park. www.johnhughes.com

Plein Air Painting in Tucson, Arizona
The workshop is designed to introduce orchestration of the landscape for strong personal statements. We have no obligation to copy what is before us, that is what the camera does. Concentration will be on the intellectual process of interpreting landscape to “fit” your motive. Although this is an outdoor workshop, much of the discussion will apply equally to studio work and procedures. We’ll work on defining and developing what constitutes a strong pictorial concept and selection of only those elements in the landscape, which support that end. The ultimate goal is to help you think and create on a higher plane. The small class size is intended to encourage enthusiastic discussions and questions dealing with our profession today…practical as well as intellectual. Accommodations in Tucson- details upon registration. www.skipwhitcomb.com

Portrait and Figurative Sculpture
How often have you wanted to try your hand at art, but always felt that you needed some background to get started? Good News! No experience is necessary to participate in these classes, only a desire to work with clay in a figurative format. If you do have some experience with clay, that’s great too. Our goal is to attain a likeness of our subject in the clay. Working from a model, we will concentrate on the fundamentals: proportion, the features, simple construction, and expressive composition of sculpture. This class is designed to be a no stress experience, so come prepared to learn new things and enjoy yourself!

Rocks, Water and Flowers in Watercolor
What could be more beautiful to paint than a pond with flowering plants spilling over the rocky banks? Also, what could be more challenging?! Design and planning are the keys. The focus will be on simplifying these complicated elements into a pleasing composition then breaking the painting process down into manageable stages, incorporating a variety of watercolor techniques. Photos will be provided but you are always welcome to paint from your own photos and sketches. There will be demonstrations of techniques suitable for the subject, critique and lots of painting time. www.juliegilbertpollard.com

Sculpting a Portrait That is More Than Features
Sculpting a portrait is not always sculpting a head. The head is not a collection of features, but a kingdom of a new order for every portrait. It is a structure built in the only possible order for that portrait. Sculpting the portrait is a surprise. Magic! It turns mud into a gaze. The hidden into obvious Harmony into authority Disposition into fact. It gives a viewer the right to believe. www.simonkogan.com

Sculpting the Horse and Rider
This class will concentrate on modeling the horse, rider, and equipment of the working cowboy. Students will learn how the figures work together with ease to create a natural and authentic composition. We will spend time discussing tools and materials used in the sculpting process, and the instructor will provide daily demonstrations as well as individual instruction and critiques. Students will work with authentic equipment and tack as reference material.

Sculpture 101
This class is specially designed for artists who have always wanted to sculpt but have been too afraid to try. While this class is geared towards the novice, it will also be important for more experienced sculptors in revisiting the fundamentals and exploring the joys of the creative process. We will use water-based clay so students can have their sculptures fired in a kiln, thus avoiding the expense of molds and bronze casting costs. My primary goal for the class is for you to have fun while learning about sculpture. The first session of this five week class will meet at my studio to discuss the creative process and determine your goals and supply needs for the course.

Seeing the Big Idea
There are many components that can go into composing successful visual statements. Narrowing one's focus-to understand what these are, what their balance is, and how to utilize them to say whatever it is we are trying to say-is very important in achieving this goal. This class will utilize the figure in intimate settings, exploring light and shadow-various visual elements (shape, value, edges, color)-their relationships to aid in seeing the "Big Idea". There will be a demo and individual instruction. This class is designed for the intermediate to advanced student, but all are welcome. www.ronhicks.com

Simplifying your Compositions
This workshop will focus on simplifying your paintings. Having a strong foundation leads to a more successful finished piece. A common mistake in making a painting is putting too much information into the picture, without having that strong base to work on. Working both from live models and from photographs, we will take a look at simplifying your work and producing a stronger image. Classes will include daily demonstrations as well as slide shows, where we will study masters of the past and see how they simplified their work to help the final image. www.loganhagege.com

Soft Pastels: Form and Surface
Build a simple foundation with colorful basic forms, like bowls and cartons, then instill some magic with intricate passages that convey a message or a place in time. Turn it sensual and paint surfaces that are smooth, slick, rough, or soft. The fun is in the details so expand your story-telling skills. Experiment with both an impressionistic and a realistic style of lettering. Subject matter will begin with vintage pitchers, decorative ceramics and other colorful products. Projects include soft pastel demonstrations, stroke technique, composition and color principles. The class atmosphere will have lively discussions and constructive critiques. All skill levels are welcome. www.lizkenyon.com

Soft Pastels: Light and Shadow
Paint ‘disco ball’ effects as light bounces around the glass curves of a honey jar. Decide how much light will fill your picture and see changes in the luminosity of your objects as you regulate the shadow values with layers of veiled color. Play with the light source and ‘time of day’ to produce soft and sharp edges; practice reproducing color that’s in full sunlight or shade; call out the hues within a shadow then enhance them with a blend of cool and warm pastels. Class atmosphere will contain lively discussions and constructive critiques. All skill levels are welcome. www.lizkenyon.com

The Essence of Reality
The focus of this workshop will be learning to see and interpret the subject matter with an emphasis on expressive painting. We will discuss the basics of composi¬tion, value, and color, emphasizing the use of contrast and rhythm. In addition to technique, we will pay particular attention to the importance of seeing and learn¬ing how to respond to and evaluate information. Students will learn to interpret the subject and enjoy the challenge of alla prima painting. Demonstrations, group discussion, a slide presentation and individual instruction will be offered throughout the week. www.carolynanderson.com

The Long Pose
Just as the title suggests, this class will feature a model in a single pose each day, giving the students an opportunity to work six hours on their painting. The model will be placed in a variety of costumes and environments to help light the fire of creativity! Composition, form, values, paint quality and edges will all be stressed. Demonstrations, discussions, and one on one instruction are all important aspects of this class, as is fun! www.nancychabounfineart.com

The Really Useful Drawing Class
All fine representational paintings have one thing in common; they are drawn well! This drawing class will give you techniques and insights to help you draw better. You will learn how to see errors instantly and be¬come more attuned to what your eyes are “saying” to you. If you need a better grasp on the key principles of shape, proportion, value, perspec¬tive and design, this class is for you. Your line work will become expres¬sive and your drawings more exciting as the instructor leads you through exercises and demonstrations. www.billlundquist.com

Trompe l’Oeil: Intensified Illusion
In this workshop being a successive compliment to tricks of illusion there will be a more intensive study of how light affects objects. This class will be more focused on larger subject matter that you may see in a hanging manner in Trompe l’Oeil work, such as, baby shoes, pocket watch or boxing gloves. (References will be provided by instructor, choices available) demonstrations on how to paint a believable shelf, with an object on it, how to paint a frame to look as though it is part of the original frame and objects as though they are placed in a shadow box setting. Students who chose to take both can also continue to work on painting they started in week one. www.jaydavenport.com

Turning Paint into Light
This workshop will concentrate on the magical qualities of light. Kreutz will teach students how to bring together drawing, edges, design, color and paint quality. Students will develop the ability to look at form with deeper understand¬ing, which involves heightening one’s awareness of how light flows, why shadows fall as they do and how atmosphere envelops the whole. The focus of the work¬shop will be to lead the student into thinking in a painterly way and to shed the linear approach. During the workshop, students will explore working with the model and still life. www.greggkreutz.com

Watercolor Travel Journaling
Ever wonder why you rarely look at those travel photos? Perhaps it’s because taking a photo requires so little attention that actual memories of the mo¬ment are scant. Not so with even a brief sketch and some notes in a journal. Sketching on location slows your pace as you observe a scene for minutes, not seconds. While I still take loads of pictures, it’s invariably my journals that, even decades later, vividly evoke wonderful places and events of our travels... of our lives! We'll sketch at a new and interesting location each week. I'm a hands-on kind of guy, providing frequent demos, and one-on-one assistance based on where you are in art. Individualized emphasis on working with color, sketching people, simplifying complex scenes, even the basics of perspective, make this an easy and pleasant introduction to journaling, to sketching, to watercolor, and to the art of seeing. Because you'll keep a journal solely for your own pleasure, you needn’t be an accomplished artist. Beginners are welcome. www.lewisblehrman.com
