Bring vibrancy and the brilliance of colored pencils to your botanical art. With layering, blending, burnishing, and pressure control you will develop confidence and learn basic color theory. Washing with a solvent and watercolor pencils will be demonstrated. Exercises include a variety of fruits and plants. Color pencil history, brands and papers will be discussed. Demonstrations, handouts, and photos provided weekly.

  • Students own materials or:
    • Strathmore Bristol 300 or 400 series smooth surface paper – this has smooth surface. You will achieve quicker coverage of paper texture.
    • Strathmore Bristol 300 or 400 vellum surface paper – this has more tooth, take a little more time to cover paper texture, but takes multiple, heavy layering. Also; Stonehenge legion white 9 x 12 – some texture
    • Hot pressed watercolor papers such as Fabriano Classico 5, Fabriano Artistico, and Arches HP paper, Winsor & Newton Aquarelle 100% cotton etc. (Hotpress watercolor paper is smoother than cold press.)
    • Colored Pencils: Brands: At least 24 – 36 count
    o Prismacolor Premier Pencil Soft Core
    o Derwent Studio, Faber Castel Polychromos
    o Note: Stay away from student grade pencils if possible – they can work but not as well
    • Blender – colorless pencil
    • Optional: 12 Watercolor pencil set
