This course will cover a “Flemish” approach to a layered painting process. Starting by developing a figure drawing from the model and then transferring this drawing onto a prepared panel. Starting the painting section will utilize 2 to 3 days to develop a painting though what I consider a Flemish approach. This approach utilizes a foundation drawing, under-painting, and dead color layering. The approach ends with a full color or “sweetening” layer applied after this foundation is established.

This course will take a foundation approach to drawing the figure and establish a figure drawing foundation for creating a panel painting utilizing a very limited palette. Starting with the artist drawing a figure drawing for 2 to 3 days which will covering/ reviewing basic figurative foundation drawing. The goal is to establish a proportional figure drawing with clear light and shadow from a directional light light source. Basic Figure drawing idea covered considers the figure as a conceptual idea. This course seeks to expose you to general principles of design employed by figure draughtsman with the use of basic media. (Pencil, inkwash.) The class will apply basic skills of structure, proportions, and light and shade to prepare for the start of a painting. There will be a focusing on basic skeletal structure with proportions.

Intermediate level. it can be a challenge for someone without any observational drawing experience. Anyone with foundation drawing, figure drawing or painting experience will likely do fine in this course. It is a course for those who wish to start or review figure drawing and for anyone wishing to learn my painting approach to the figure.

  • Drawing Material;
    Drawing tools: Graphite and or charcoal pencil (HB or 2B),
    basic ball point pen (basic permanent ink Bic disposable pen)

    eraser
    Optional; One 18 x 24” sheet of drawing paper supplied. bring own drawing pad if you wish
    Optional: Drawing Board. you could bring drawing board with clips,
    or use 18” x 24” gessoed panel (listed below) with tape as your drawing board.
    Painting Materials:
    PAINTING MEDIUMS AND SOLVENT;
    Alkyd resin medium (I use M Graham Walnut Alkyd, or Gamblin Galkyd)
    Important as Alkyd usually allows for layering within hours (vs days)
    OMS (odorless mineral spirits. I use Gamsol )
    and Gage may have a set policy for solvent so please check) (NO TERPENTINE )
    Minimum of 4 BRUSHES FOR OIL;
    Flat or Filbert are recommended.
    1. #6 or #8 approx. 1 inch wide
    2. #4 approx. ½ inch wide
    3. #2 approx. 1/8 inch wide
    4. (Round “watercolor” brush Size 0 for detail )
    Optional; I often use a ½” or 1” cheap hardware store (hog bristle) is for blending.
    Optional; I sometimes use a # 8 round watercolor brush when I do a ink wash under drawing for my painting. Some
    brushes for this activity will be supplied or a well maintained clean oil brush can also service this activity
    TWO GESSOED PAINTING PANELS ( I USE AMPERSAND BRAND GESSOED PANELS )
    1. 18 x 24 ( 16 x 20 can work)
    2. At least one one other small panel for alla-prima study approx. 8 x 10
    • Ampersand brand recommended other brands fine if gessoed
    OTHER TOOLS/ EQUIPMENT
    Flat Palette ( approx 9”x 12” to 11” x 14” plastic or varnished wood.) For Oils

    Trowel shaped palette knife. (called a painting knife)
    Apron and/or paint clothes
    Ivory soap
    PAINTS
    • 50ml (large) tube of Alkyd Titanium White
    • Gamblin has FastMatte Brand and Windsor and Newton Has Griffin brand. May need to be ordered
    online from Blick or Jerry’s Artarama sites. Other “quick dry” white could possibly work.
    • Alkyd White is important for guaranteeing quick drying of layers.
    • Other paints do not have to be alkyd based.
    Brand of oil paints not important, but I believe Gamblin and Winsor and Newton have all the colors listed
    • Appox 40ml tubes
    1. Iron oxide red (burn sienna or other “warm” red colors can work)
    2. Payne’s grey (a semi-transparent cool black)
    OR
    3. Ivory Black
    4. Utramarine blue
    • A cold semi transparent black can be created by mixing black with ultramarine blue for a similar cool
    black like Payne’s grey and another option would be to buy a cold black.
    • As less time will be spent at working from a full palette, so based on this fact other paints that create
    a full color palette is your choice.
    Minimum suggested to create a triadic palette (red yellow and blue)
    • Cadmium Yellow Light or Hansa yellow lightt. ,
    • Cadmium red lightt or Naphthol Red,
    • Ultramarine blue
    Theses listed colors below also exist on my palette to address secondary colors
    40ml tubes, Cadmium Orange, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cerulean Blue, Thalo Green.
    I often have these colors on my Palette as well
    Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green
