Oil pastels are probably the most misunderstood and underappreciated medium. Many artists, when asked about oil pastels, think of a mixture of oil paint and soft pastels. The average person thinks of crayons because their first exposure to them is with a student-grade version and so assume that they are hard to work with.  Misconceptions abound. The truth is:

• Oil pastels are dynamic, vivid, versatile, and extremely forgiving

• Oil pastels will expand your range of artistic expression

Geared for those who love to work with their hands, you squash, push and blend oil pastels with your fingertips as well as apply texture, carve, scrape and cut away with a palette knife. Three basic techniques are taught in this one-day class for creating everything from photo realistic portraits to lush landscapes to eye popping abstracts, but the focus is on landscapes. By the end of the day, you may even join the growing number of converts to this wonderful medium. www.turneronlinegallery.com

Turner, Scott

I was raised in Anchorage, Alaska and have lived in the Southwest for the last 30 years. I began painting with oil pastels in 2006 when my son gave me a set for Christmas with a note which said “Draw me a picture Dad”. Once I picked them up, I never put them down. I began showing my work in juried art shows and exhibitions in 2012. In 2015 Scottsdale Museum of the West acquired my painting “Lake Powell: The Ramp” which has been on exhibit since the museum opened. It was their first acquisition. In 2018 I was selected by Savior-Faire/Sennelier to be their Official Oil Pastel Artist. I am the first to hold that title. Savior-Faire is the exclusive North American distributor of Sennelier products. My “wife for life” Margie and our two Australian cattle dogs, Flash and Buddy, live a peaceful and prosperous life. God is very good to us. www.turneronlinegallery.com
