Six thousand years ago people in Mesopotamia began to build cities, invent writing, and follow kings who created vast empires. This course explores the region from the time of urbanization to the defeat of the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great. Along the way, the region's culture and religion come into focus through famous figures such as Gilgamesh, Sargon the Great, Hammurabi, and Nebuchadnezzar.
