Ludwig van Beethoven’s early Septet in E-flat major for three winds and four strings was one of his most successful and popular works during his lifetime. It circulated in many different editions and arrangements including one by Beethoven himself: the Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, Op. 38. In this performance, the bassoon replaces the cello. A set of songs provides an interlude in the middle of the trio’s six movements.
