Bringing Stories to Life (IP)
Fall (15 to 16.5 hours) | Available (Membership Required)
Every person has a story to tell, but memorable writing requires more than simply recounting events. In this engaging, hands-on workshop, participants will learn the storytelling techniques that transform ordinary experiences into compelling narratives. Through practical exercises and examples from published authors, writers will discover how to use vivid detail, immersive scene setting, deep reporting and research, dialogue, characterization, and strong narrative structure to create stories that resonate with readers. The course emphasizes showing rather than telling, developing an authentic voice, and identifying the moments that reveal larger truths. Designed for writers of all levels, this course is also ideal for former attendees of the Storytelling workshop who want to build on the creative writing skills introduced in the introductory class. Whether you’re writing memoir, narrative nonfiction, personal essays, or fiction, you’ll gain the tools to bring your stories to life and the confidence to craft narratives that readers won’t forget.
This course will combine lecture with class discussions. There are no required books for this course.
