Discover how a 7,000± square foot garden area can support over 240 varieties of perennial, self-seeding, and annual plants—including vegetables, flowers, herbs, fruits, shrubs, trees, grasses, ferns, mushrooms, and more. This workshop will walk you through a sustainable garden design that incorporates permaculture principles, such as companion planting, microclimates, and minimal soil preparation. Learn about the use of creative techniques like spiral herb gardens; gutter irrigation; lasagna, hügelkultur, worm bins, and mounded composting; as well as the application of various mulches. The result? A low-maintenance garden that requires minimal weeding, watering, and pest control—without the need for gas-powered equipment—while providing an abundance of food and constant blooms. You’ll also see the integration of meandering paths made of brick, stone, moss, and eco-grass for both beauty and functionality. Participants will review a plant list, view garden plans, see a slide show, and peruse recommended books to inspire your own ecological garden design. This course will be presented in a lecture format.
