Introduction to Curling (In-person)

Winter (4 - 8.5 hours) | Registration opens 11/23/2026 12:00 AM EDT

Did you have a chance to watch the American men’s and women’s curling teams compete at the last Winter Olympics? Did you think that it looked like a fun game? Here is your chance to learn all about curling and to try your hand at playing the game. Curling began in Scotland several hundred years ago, but continues to be played in many countries, most notably in Canada and the U.S. It is a game of skill that most people can pick up quickly, but it takes years to master. Players often play into their 70s (your instructors are in their 70s) using adaptive equipment and techniques, and many players pick up the game after retirement, which is what your instructors did! The great part is that you can have fun and enjoy playing at any skill level. The Upper Valley Curling Club provides all equipment; you need to have warm clothing and shoes with non-skid soles. In a two-hour session, there will be breaks as needed to warm up, as most of the classes after the first session will be held on the ice. Class will be at the Wendell A. Barwood Ice Arena in White River Junction. There will be a small charge (lab fee) to cover the arena rental and equipment use.

  • There is a $40 lab fee for use of the rink.

There are no required books for this course.
LaBelle, Peter
Peter LaBelle

Peter LaBelle, like his co-Study Leader Steve Rauh, retired from a career that had nothing to do with curling! Both curl with the Upper Valley Curling Club based in White River Junction. Steve has been curling for several years and has taught curling at the club level and in Osher classes. He also competes in curling matches at other clubs and venues.

Steve Rauh started curling when he retired and is certified by USA Curling as an instructor. Like Steve, he has been curling for several years and has taught curling at the club level and in Osher classes. He also competes in curling matches at other clubs and venues.
