Asian Art at Dartmouth: Highlights from the Hood Museum of Art (In-person)

Winter (4 - 8.5 hours) | Registration opens 11/23/2026 12:00 AM EDT

Opening in the winter of 2027, the Hood Museum will present Asian Art at Dartmouth, the first comprehensive exhibition drawn from its permanent Asian art collection. This expansive presentation features 191 objects displayed across four galleries and organized into four sequential rotations. The exhibition highlights works from Japan, Korea, China, India, the Himalayan regions, Thailand, and Cambodia. Class sessions will center on close observation and discussion of individual objects, expanding participants’ understanding of their historical, religious, and cultural contexts. The breadth of materials is considerable: stoneware and porcelain vessels and figurines; sculptural prayer wheels and metal armor; wooden and metal boxes; batik textiles; 19th-century sepia photographs; and paintings on silk, paper, and woodblock impressions. Attention will also be given to the technical and material aspects of these works, deepening engagement with the exhibition’s remarkable range.

My love and appreciation for Asian art began in early childhood. My mother collected artwork from Japan and Thailand, and my curiosity about these objects was constantly nurtured. As a teenager, I was fortunate to spend a summer in Japan fully immersed in its art and culture. Later travels to Bhutan, Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, and India deepened my understanding of Asian artistic traditions. I look forward to sharing these experiences— and continuing to learn—alongside my students.
