This course will present video performances of four Gilbert & Sullivan’s Operettas: The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, and one extra selected by the Study Leader. Background to be covered among the class sessions will include biographical information on each of W. S. Gilbert, the lyricist and dramatist, and Arthur Sullivan, the composer, and the social and political environment of the times. Prior to each class, there will be a brief synopsis of the storyline since Gilbert & Sullivan shows often take many twists and turns. The videos will be enabled for closed captioning. Following the video, there will be class discussion.
