Recent History Through Political Drawings (In-person)

Winter (4 - 8.5 hours) | Registration opens 11/23/2026 12:00 AM EDT

We will follow the careers of cartoonists Bill Mauldin, Herbert Block (aka Herblock), and Pat Oliphant. All three won Pulitzer Prizes for their critical and satirical talents from World War II to the present. These three tended to focus on Presidents, whose caricatures became well-known to their readers. However, general issues like the Cold War, Civil Rights, Vietnam, the Women’s Movement, the Middle East, Climate Change, and China also captured their sharp pen. We will view dozens of their works, covering the years from Franklin D. Roosevelt to present-day Trump, discussing how appropriate they were for the issue at hand. Some even offended liberals! Lively discussion is definitely encouraged, as well as mention of other cartoonists.
