All great art is structured--whether films, novels, poetry, plays, dance, music, or painting. Unstructured paintings go to hotel lobbies to die! Learning image structure will elevate your art beyond describing what you see. I will not teach you to paint like me, but to paint YOUR way, with YOUR voice and vision, only better. This workshop is for all painters, whether representational or abstract; oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics are welcome. Risk-taking will be celebrated. Timeless principles, illustrated by many master examples of many genres from art history, will ignite your creativity. David Michael Slonim
In the tradition of artists like Miro, Albers, Martin, and Calder, David Michael Slonim reaches simultaneously for the playful and spiritual through structured experiments in color.
David earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 1988. For the next decade, he created images for advertising, editorial, and corporate clients including Wrigley's Gum, Reader's Digest, Sports Illustrated, IBM and T.G.I.Fridays.
Turning to landscape painting in 1998, he continued studying artists like Diebenkorn, Mitchell and Rothko. The work naturally morphed toward abstraction as his focus shifted to the structure beneath the image. He relaunched his career as an abstract painter in 2014 and has since exhibited with galleries in New York, Boston, Chicago, Scottsdale, Jackson Hole, Indianapolis, and The Hamptons.
David is also a prolific children's author and illustrator, with over 25 books illustrated, translated into six languages. His books have been recognized for excellence by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and Society of Illustrators.
David was selected to be a Visiting Artist with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, the world's largest children's museum, 2020-2021. He speaks regularly to organizations and schools, inspiring others to explore their own creative potential.
