In order to be successful, a painting must have five elements: Concept, Composition, Drawing, Values and Color. Of these five elements color is the most fascinating, mysterious, and magical. Rarely will two artists see color the same. However, the laws of color harmony are as mathematically fixed as the law of gravity. There are certain irrefutable truisms in painting, one is the fewer colors used, the stronger and more harmonious the statement. Respected painters, past and present, understand this concept and employ it in one form or another in their work. In this workshop we will explore the power of a limited palette. Working from a “standard” palette of 12-14 colors students will calculate progressive sequences on the color wheel to create complimentary schemes, simple triads, and dynamic triads of color, referred to as harmonic chords, comprised of three to six colors, and explore how to select the best color set to serve our concept. This is a logical and practical process for orchestrating a harmonious limited palette for a specific painting. Each new piece will require an entirely new working palette. The possibilities are limitless. The goal of this workshop is to give the artist a reliable foundation for making color decisions, in other words to demystify color harmony in painting and empowering them with a deeper understanding of an important principle. This is certainly not intended to be the final word, rather a starting point for developing personal expressions of color. There will be demonstrations and we will put this into practice in the field. www.skipwhitcomb.com
