Light and atmospheric forces act upon the landscape to create a story, and it’s up to you as the artist to decide how to tell it. Join award-winning artist Kathleen Hudson as she reveals how she infuses her landscapes with atmosphere. Students will learn how to see subtle color and value shifts that give their paintings depth. They will also learn tools for effective self-critique so they can strengthen their own work at each stage of progress. Hudson will bring examples of her preparatory sketches and color studies so students can thumb through those in person. Each morning will feature a presentation and demonstration, and then exercises for students focusing on value and composition. Afternoons will be devoted to one-on-one instruction. Each student’s studies during the first three days will lead to a finished (or at least near-finished!) studio landscape painting by the final day. Students are encouraged to email several landscape painting examples beforehand and list some specific things they would like to work on. Tuition includes 40-page workshop handbook. www.kathleenbhudson.com

Hudson, Kathleen

Kathleen B. Hudson emphasizes dynamic light and atmospherics in her work. She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and an Artist Member of the Copley Society of Art. In 2017, Hudson received the Grand Prize in the 6th Annual PleinAir Salon for her painting Bright Morning, Timberline Falls, which was featured on the cover of PleinAir Magazine. Southwest Art named her an "Artist to Watch." According to her family, Hudson began painting as soon as she could hold a brush. She enjoyed an unconventional upbringing and traveled widely, exploring new places and--notably--dozens of art museums. She started painting in oil at age 12 and has been mostly self-taught since high school. In the fall of 2005, Hudson moved from her native Kentucky to Boston to begin an undergraduate degree at Harvard University. During her years in Boston, she came to love the beautiful New England landscape as she painted, studied mountain pilgrimage narratives, and led backpacking trips for fellow students. In 2013, Hudson returned to her hometown of Lexington and began to take part in plein air painting festivals. She now undertakes several national juried competitions each year and has gained recognition for her work, including Artist's Choice at Forgotten Coast en Plein Air (2018), Best of Show at the Augusta Plein Air Festival (2014), and Third Place at the Lighthouse Plein Air Festival (2018) and Plein Air Rockies (2016). Hudson's background as a mostly self-taught artist informs her teaching philosophy: she aims to equip her students with skills they can use to make strides on their own, long after a workshop is over. She has given presentations as an invited faculty member at the PleinAir Convention & Expo in Santa Fe, NM and at Plein Air South in Port St. Joe, FL.
