This beginner’s course will teach students how to build a portrait with basic but foundational techniques. First, the course will cover the appropriate uses of dots, lines, and simple shapes in creating portrait outlines. Students will then build on those outlines with tones and values. Finally, students will learn how to look at each portrait in its full composition to unify the painting. www.instagram.com/jamesjiangart

Jiang, James

James Jiang began his study of painting at the age of 7, with a focus on still portraits. While in middle school, James received an appointment to paint the school murals. When applying for high schools, he was among the top three to pass the entrance examinations for the most prestigious high school in the region. Jiang later graduated from the University of Art of Canton with a substantial background in the techniques used by successful artists. In 1992 Mr. Jiang immigrated to the United Sates. He lived with his family in Los Angeles, CA and worked for a portraiture studio in Orange County. He has studied under the award winning artist, Mian Situ. Jiang now resides in Arizona. He often travels back to China for subject matter and he paints what he saw there from his home studio. Characterizing his current style as “California Impressionism”, the young artist prides himself in capturing the details that bring his paintings to life.
