Expressive Portraits – From Life and Photos
William A. Schneider AISM, OPAM, PSA-MP

Every professional artist says, “Work from life!” But sometimes we have no choice. Unfortunately, photos lie to us. There are four elements to realistic painting: shape (drawing), value, color, and edges; the problem is that even in the best of photo references three of the four are always wrong! So, we become very adept at copying wrong information…and it shows in our paintings!

While there is no substitute for plenty of life-work, in this workshop you will learn how to spot the errors in the photo reference, and more importantly, compensate for them. A second goal will be to loosen up! Most artists admire the expressive, suggestive brushwork of masters like Nicolai Fechin, John Singer Sargent, and Anders Zorn. But understanding how they achieved those effects is another matter. In most cases it’s not what they put in, but rather what they chose to leave out.

This four-day oil and pastel workshop is for artists who are advanced beginners or higher. (An advanced beginner has reasonably accurate drawing skills and painting experience). You will learn:
• How to take more useful photos
• Three hacks to avoid the most egregious photo-errors
• How to make a quick, but valuable color study
• The best way to effectively use a photo
• A technique to create Fechin’s broken edge effects
• How to simplify
• Masterful edge control
• The key to color harmony
• How to turn the form with temperature

William will demonstrate in both oil and pastel (a complete head study as well as several “mini-demos” – painting eyes, painting the mouth etc. This workshop will turbo-charge your understanding of drawing, value, color temperature, edge control and – how to work from photos without looking like an amateur! www.schneiderart.com
