This workshop is aimed at the more experienced landscape oil painter who wishes to explore the ideas, techniques and issues involved with expanding upon studies successfully in the studio. Jill Carver will discuss concepts and techniques aimed to resolve and strengthen motifs and improve overall design, from initial ‘thought boards’ to actual preparation techniques. She will discuss the science of how we see and how we can control and excite eye movement. Moving on from advanced design concepts and tools, Jill will tackle the practical techniques of scaling up a design through ‘surface quality’ issues of working larger, working wet-over-dry, re-working passages that need correction, and the use of mediums, glazing techniques and varnishes. Lastly, the class will address the topic of studio ‘life’ and discuss how to make the studio an exciting and productive place to be. Jill will structure the workshop through set exercises, lectures, demos and brainstorming discussions. Students will be working from their own visual material. www.jillcarver.com

Jill’s work has been featured in Southwest Art magazine, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, Art of the West, and Western Art and Architecture. In 2014, Jill won the Gold Medal (Artists’ Choice) for Best in Show at Maynard Dixon Country and in the same year was inaugurated as Signature Member in ‘Plein Air Painters of America’; she currently serves on the board. Previously, she won numerous awards including: ‘Artists Choice’ at the Laguna Beach Invitational in 2009; and, at Plein Air Easton in 2008. She participated in the highly regarded Coors show in 2016 and 2017, and was invited as Guest Artist at the Northwest Rendevous Show in 2016 and 2018. Originally from London, England, Jill Carver moved to the United States in 2002. Before becoming a full time professional artist, she was a curatorial research assistant at the National Portrait Gallery in London for twelve years. She is a popular and highly regarded teacher.
