ONLINE on ZOOM | 11AM-3PM Mountain Standard Time | with CRITIQUES
In this 3 day workshop, students will create a finished portrait drawing from a photo reference provided by Shana. We will successfully create emotive drawings from your photo.
Emphasis will be placed on value control and edges. By focusing on deliberate pencil pressure and maintaining accurate mass relationships rather than rendering, the application of hatched directional marks creates form and energy. Students will use the method of relative sizing to transcribe their photograph to their paper.
Class discussions will include the advantages and pitfalls of using photo references for drawing and how to accurately judge values, edges and forms within your photo.
This workshop aims to guide students toward creating a drawing from a photo reference, using traditional drawing techniques. Shana will instruct students on how to use photographs to create a drawing that surpasses the look of the photograph, not simply imitates it.
This includes a pre-class zoom chat with the active students and an hour of group critiques each day.
