This workshop is inspired by the Dutch Breakfast Still Life (Ontbijtjes) which developed in the 17th century. To mimic Ontbijites, you will work from fruits and vegetables such as lemons, oranges, grapes, olives, displayed with a bowl, plate or cup. You will paint a variety of different textures such as those of metal, bread, and fabric, starting by setting up compositions, drawing, and transferring. We will work in grisailles before completing each part with color. New York Grand Central Atelier instructor Justin Wood will execute demos on each of the specific techniques, paint his own still life in class as well as follow every student individually throughout the week.
