Learn the fundamentals of mark making in this drawing class designed for beginners. Emphasis will be placed on exploration of drawing media while learning the basics of line, shape, space, value, and light logic. Using graphite, charcoal, and ink, you will learn to translate your observations of our world into two-dimensional imagery. By observing still life and in class demonstrations, you will become comfortable talking about and producing artwork in a supportive studio environment. Explore and develop your own creative expression in this introductory drawing class.

  • • Drawing board, 20×25 or larger
  • • Sketchbook, 8×10 or 9×12
  • • 1 med pad newsprint paper, approx. 11×14
  • • 1 pad white drawing paper, 18×24
  • • Graphite pencils: HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B
  • • 2 Compressed Charcoal pencils: 1 white, 1 black
  • • 2 sticks compressed soft charcoal
  • • 5-7 sticks vine or willow soft charcoal
  • • Art gum eraser
  • • Workable grey eraser
  • • Can of workable fixative spray
  • • Chamois (approx. 5×7 – you may also use a soft non-textured cloth from home)
  • • 2-4 stumps in med-large sizes (1-2 each for pencil and charcoal work)
  • • Metal ruler, 15”-18”
  • • Pencil sharpener
  • • Small bottle of black India ink
  • • 2-4 sheets thick watercolor paper, 9×12 or larger (to use for ink drawing)
  • • 2 round tip ink brushes (med-large size)
  • • Small water container (plastic)
  • • Plastic mixing palette for ink mixing
  • • Roll of blue tape
  • • Scissors
