Discover the art and practice of portraiture as you learn to compose from observation, acquire strategies for organizing visual information, and study historic precedents. Work with renowned artist Jim Phalen to learn how to render convincing and compelling likenesses of the model in oil.

  • Paints (No student grade, professional grade paints only, avoid paints the say Hue on the label)
  • Lead White (or Flake white) available at Blicks and made by Williamsburg Paints
  • Yellow Ocher
  • Ivory Black
  • Brown Pink by Williamsburg Paints
  • Cad Red medium
  • Jaune Brilliant by Williamsburg
  • Naples Yellow Reddish by Williamsburg.
  • Cobalt Blue.
  • Small jar of Traditional Painting Medium (or a small jar of Galkyd Painting Medium)
  • RAGS! (Find a big old tee shirt)
  • 2 Pre stretched or pre gessoed Canvas or Canvas boards, 12x16
  • 12x 16 flat hand held pallet (paper is fine)
  • Pallet cup that clips to the pallet
  • Brushes Rounds and Filberts (Hog bristles are fine)
  • #6, #8, and #10 Rounds
  • #4, #6, #10 and #12 Filberts
  • 10 or 12 once empty jar with lid for solvent.
