Head out on a plein-air painting expedition to paint the lavender fields of Lavender Wind Farm on Whidbey Island! Students will focus on finding a suitable painting location; developing a pleasing composition; simplifying the complexity of nature; using linear and trial perspective; and developing their color mixing skills in oil or acrylic while enjoying the fragrant setting.

  • Paper/Canvas/Sculpting Material:
  • -2 or 3 gessoed panels - 11”x14” is a good size. If you like to paint larger:16”x20” MAX.
  • -Sketchbook
  • Paint/Color/Dry media:
  • It is very important that you use professional artist quality paints. Student-grade paint may look like a bargain but it has less pigment and more filler than professional quality paint.
  • Artist’s colors (NOT student-grade paints) – oil or acrylic
  • -White – titanium or titanium/zinc mix
  • -Nickel titanite yellow also known as titanite yellow (Golden Acrylics makes this color)
  • -Cadmium yellow light
  • -Yellow ochre
  • -Burnt umber
  • -Cadmium red light
  • -Alizarin crimson permanent (or Quinacridone Magenta for acrylic painters)
  • -Ultramarine blue
  • -Cerulean blue
  • -Ivory black
  • -Ultramarine violet
  • Painting medium –
  • For oils: (my favorite is Gamblin Galkyd Gel Medium – gel-form in tube)
  • For acrylics: slow dry acrylic medium.
  • Brush/Pencils/Sculpting tools:
  • Range of brushes—bring what you have! Scruffy brushes are great for landscape painting.
  • Soft Brushes
  • Flats: 6,4,2
  • Rounds: 12, 4
  • Liners/riggers: long, thin 2
  • Hog-Bristle Brushes
  • Filbert: 8
  • Flat: 10, 8
  • Miscellaneous:
  • -Palette
  • -Small jar with lid
  • -Pencils for sketching
  • SUGGESTED:
  • -Vinyl disposable gloves (find at drugstore)
  • PLEIN AIR SUPPLIES:
  • - a folding/easy to carry easel
  • - a small folding stool
  • - a bag or rolling cart to carry your supplies into the field
  • - a way to transport wet canvases (Guerrilla Painter Handy Porters are my favorite).
  • Protection from the elements:
