This course is an introduction to relief printing focusing on landscapes in woodblock. You will develop skill and technique as you create landscapes through reductive relief printing techniques. You will learn how to employ safe wood cutting techniques, use oil-based inks and generate original prints. You will work from photographs or drawings to design, carve and print your own landscape studies. Upon completion you will have an expanded toolkit of visual arts vocabulary and way of thinking artistically through the production of original and contemporary prints.

  • -Printmaking Paper, such as BFK Rives and Stonehenge (approximately 2-3 sheets of standard size paper (30’’ x 22’’) - may require more or less) OR pads of printmaking papers (see images for example)
  • -Landscape reference images, sketches, photos, any necessary supplies for image/plate- planning process
  • -Portfolio to keep completed prints in (can be homemade)
  • -Newsprint pad (9x12'' or smaller in size)
  • -Woodcut tools (if already own)
  • $20 will be collected by the instructor at the beginning of class to cover some materials and tools brought in
