At the essence of observational painting is the problem of abstracting and simplifying nature into dynamic shapes, rhythms, and tones for a flat surface. We will use two models and two, different poses to design and build this flat space using balance, light, and atmosphere. We will develop paintings which have a sense of space and place a figure convincingly into that space. Light, space, and form will be seen primarily as functions of tonal organization. This workshop aims to benefit students of all levels and to explore strategies which are personal and non-formulaic, while addressing the organizational challenges, rigors, and possibilities of representational painting.
