Make a head and shoulders portrait beginning with a brush drawing on a toned ground. Then paint from dark to light: the realization of form through painting the effects of the light. This method is based on light direction, light and shadow, and the effect of tonal progression we see on rounded form, proceeding from dark to light. It entails painting sectionally, from dark to light, first painting a base progression, and then into this wet base, brushing in our lights by placing other, lighter brushstrokes, thus topping out and illuminating our forms. This method is also called Form Painting because of the tangible way it expresses form by the actions of light.
