Draw with expressive line and color in this mixed media class. You will work from your own reflection to study the basic proportions of the head along with other building blocks such as shadow shapes and compositional balances. This study will be expanded upon by working from a live model using mixed media. A variety of media will be used, including: soft pastel, color inks, watercolor, water-soluble crayons, collage, and charcoal. Being an expressive drawing class, this class will focus more on how color, line and texture can elicit personality and character than studying anatomy. Previous drawing experience is highly recommended.

  • For the FIRST SESSION bring (18x24”) White Drawing Paper PAD.
  • Also have (as listed below): compressed charcoal, black charcoal 12-stick set, inexpensive soft pastel set, black and one color drawing ink, containers for inks and water, ink brushes, eraser, chamois, some paper towels, drawing board and clips.
  • • Drawing Pad, minimum size of 18x24”, 25 or 50 sheets—white drawing paper (60 or 80 lb. weight is good)
  • • (1) 12-stick pack: BLACK CHARCOAL STICKS. Brands: Sargent or Dick Blick’s “Blick square charcoal sticks” box. (Alphacolor is another brand that makes similar charcoal sticks, but I do NOT recommend this one.)
  • • 1 stick COMPRESSED CHARCOAL, soft or medium (3B recommended). Recommended brands: PITT, or Generals Brand JUMBO COMPRESSED CHARCOAL (rectangular and flat shaped) type—SOFT.
  • • 2 bottles Drawing Ink—BLACK and a COLOR: one bottle of BLACK ink and one bottle of a color of your choice. The drawing ink brands I recommend are Kohinoor, FW Acrylic Artists’ ink, Pelican, Dr Martins Hydrus Watercolor ink (do NOT purchase Higgins or Winsor & Newton inks, they’re too weak in pigment). Sumi is good for black ink, or the house brand’s black drawing ink (such as Dick Blick’s)
  • • 1 WHITE PLASTIC ERASER--STAEDLER / MARS BRAND is best.
  • • 1 Small CHAMOIS
  • • 1 medium or large ROUND BAMBOO BRUSH. Or, a large watercolor round brush if you already own one.
  • • 1 two inch flat chip brush (inexpensive thin and wide, 2” is best)
  • • 1 LARGE PLASTIC CONTAINER to hold water for drawing ink (quart size yogurt containers are great)
  • • 3 or 4 SMALL PLASTIC CONTAINERS for ink washes (cups or jars)—with lids are best (or you may also like to bring one larger lidded jar to keep and transport home ink washes).
  • • 1 PAPER TOWEL ROLL—I recommend Bounty or Viva brands. (tearing off several sheets for class is fine, rather than bringing a whole roll)
  • • 2 LARGE CLIPS to hold paper to your board. I recommend extra large BINDER CLIPS found at office supply stores.
  • • DRAWING BOARD, to fit your papers. Half-inch thick Foam Core Board is highly recommended. These are available at art stores pre-cut. They are very durable and lightweight.
  • • SOFT PASTELS: for the first meeting, have ONE economy pack (inexpensive, student grade), 24-stick pack is best. Recommended Brands include: Sargent, Alvin, ProArt. NOTE: I’ll review better quality soft pastels during class, along with other optional media.
  • • (4) sheets GOOD DRAWING PAPER suitable for both charcoal and ink wash. I recommend Domestic Etching, Lenox or Coventry Rag (minimum size is 18x24”, up to 26” X 40”). (NOT needed the first session)
  • • I will review collage materials in class (optional adhesives, surfaces and media)
