Learn to capture the wondrous colors of autumn! In this course you will learn color-mixing, the importance of contrast, and how to interpret value to capture the beauty of the autumn landscape. Students will work en plein air as weather permits, or from photos in the studio. Painting locations will include the Washington Park Arboretum, Volunteer Park, and Kubota Gardens.

  • Students may work in either oils or acrylics

  • • White – titanium/zinc mix

  • • House painting brush – 3”
  • Painting medium – For oils: (my favorite is Daniel Smith Medium for Oils & Alkyds – gel form in tube – doesn’t dry too fast) – OR -- For acrylics: matte acrylic medium.
  • Small jar with lid
  • Canvas or panel - 11x14 inches
  • Canvas Pad – 9x12” or 12x16”
  • Sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Chalk or white pastel
  • Reference photos of dramatic skies
  • SUGGESTED:
  • Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal box with glass or disposable pallet
  • Gesso for additional prep – 8 oz. acrylic gesso
  • Sandpaper - 150 grit – one or two sheets
  • Vinyl disposable gloves (find at drugstore)
