In a step-by-step process, learn the methods of oil painting while exploring the still-life genre. In order to remove fear and promote your artistic confidence, we'll address the foundations of value, warm, and cool relationships and color as well as methods for self-correction and problem solving.

  • Supports: 5 - 11”x 14” Canvas panels or stretched canvas
  • Paints: Student grade and hues work fine
  • - Titanium White (200ml)
  • - Cadmium Yellow
  • - Yellow Ochre
  • - Cadmium Red Light
  • - Alizarin Crimson
  • - Burnt Sienna
  • - Burnt Umber
  • - Raw Umber
  • - Ultramarine Blue
  • - Cobalt Blue
  • - Cerulean Blue
  • - Green Earth or Terre Verte (optional)
  • Brushes: You can bring in your favorite brushes to work with, but in case you need to purchase some here is what I suggest to start with. A mix of sizes and bristle vs. synthetic brushes is best.
  • - #2, 4, 6, & 8 filbert bristle brushes
  • - #2, 4 & 6 filbert synthetic brushes
  • - #4 or #6 round synthetic brushes
  • Sketch pad and pencil
  • Yupo Paper (either a 9x12" bright white pad or 144Ib 26x40" sheet cut into roughly 8x10" pieces)
  • Palette (glass, sealed wooden, or palette paper pad)
  • Trowel shaped palette knife (Dick Blick style #44 is a good size)
  • Scraper with blades (if using glass palette)
  • Absorbent rags (old t-shirts are great)
  • Paper towels
  • Refined Linseed Oil or Oil Painting Medium (Galkyd, Windsor and Newton, Liquin, etc for faster drying)
  • 1 small jar with lid for medium
  • OMS – Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamblin Gamsol is approved at Gage)
  • Silicoil Brush Cleaning Tank (optional, 2nd jar also ok)
  • Brush washer (Brush Cleaner, Murphy's Oil Soap, or bar soap in soap dish are good options)
  • Baby Oil (optional, but works great to clean brushes in addition to soap)
  • 1 small jar with lid for medium
  • White Acrylic Gesso (1 quart) (optional, to add another layer to canvas panels for a smoother surface)
  • 2 Bull dog clips
