How do you begin an abstract painting? Sometimes it is overwhelming to think where to start. This class will help you: the teacher will share ideas, approaches and techniques that Yamamoto has been using in her practice for nearly 20 years.

Learn how to tap into and express your own inspiration and intuition, drawing from life experiences, imagination and memories--making each work unique and original. Students will learn to grasp the atmosphere of an abstract work before they go into details with form, texture, and stroke. Students will learn how to experiment with techniques such as layering colors and creating repetitive shapes, as well as using printmaking tools like stencils and brayers that can help make the surface less controlled, more unexpected and experimental. Process itself is abstract and intuitive, yet methodical. Students will learn how to navigate the thought process and decision making involved in abstract painting.

Yamamoto has a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts with Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture. She was recently included in the exhibitions at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in 2018, Seattle Asian Art Museum and Out of Sight in 2017. Her works are exploration of space, consciousness and memories.
