In this introductory fundamentals class, learn key concepts and artistic principles in order to accurately render line, shape, proportion and negative space while working from simple objects and the still-life. Students explore various drawing media, including charcoal and graphite, as you progress from simple lines toward a nuanced understanding of tonal description.

  • • Drawing board, 20×25 or larger
  • • Sketchbook, 8×10 or 9×12
  • • 1 med pad newsprint paper, approx. 11×14
  • • 1 pad white drawing paper, 18×24
  • • Graphite pencils: HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B
  • • 2 Compressed Charcoal pencils: 1 white, 1 black
  • • 2 sticks compressed soft charcoal
  • • 5-7 sticks vine or willow soft charcoal
  • • Art gum eraser
  • • Workable grey eraser
  • • Can of workable fixative spray
  • • Chamois (approx. 5×7 – you may also use a soft non-textured cloth from home)
  • • 2-4 stumps in med-large sizes (1-2 each for pencil and charcoal work)
  • • Metal ruler, 15”-18”
  • • Pencil sharpener
  • • Small bottle of black India ink
  • • 2-4 sheets thick watercolor paper, 9×12 or larger (to use for ink drawing)
  • • 2 round tip ink brushes (med-large size)
  • • Small water container (plastic)
  • • Plastic mixing palette for ink mixing
  • • Roll of blue tape
  • • Scissors
