In this Expressive Figure Drawing class, you will explore the five basic art elements: Line, Shape, Volume, Mass, Texture. One element is focused on each week of this five-week course, as you draw near life size on 24x36” paper. Gesture drawing is also practiced during each session to hone your ability to see form first, draw quickly and expand your own individual expression of the figure. Some figure drawing experience is recommended.

  • For the FIRST SESSION bring Rough Newsprint (24X36”) and 5 sheets of 24X36” White Drawing Paper (as described below). Please bring the size of paper listed.
  • Also have (as listed below): compressed charcoal, black charcoal 12-stick set, black an drawing ink, containers for inks and water, ink brushes, eraser, chamois, some paper towels, drawing board and clips.
  • • (1) 100 sheet pad ROUGH NEWSPRINT 24X36”.
  • o Please ONLY BRING THIS SIZE. Be sure it’s rough. You will need around 20-30 sheets per class.
  • • Approximately 30 SHEETS Inexpensive Drawing Paper 24×36? (80 lb weight): The best value is mail-ordering a 100-sheet pack through Dick Blick (Dick Blick White Sulphite Drawing Paper, 80 lb.). The class may want to make a group order to share. We will review this during the first meeting and I will have some to share if you’re not able to get it for the first meeting.
  • • (1) 9x12” or larger SPIRAL BOUND SKETCHBOOK
  • o Recommended paper weight is 90-100 lbs.
  • • (2) 12-stick pack: BLACK CHARCOAL STICKS. Brands: Sargent or Dick Blick’s “Blick square charcoal sticks” box, item # 20016-2129. (I do NOT recommend Alphacolor brand).
  • • 1 stick COMPRESSED CHARCOAL, soft or medium (3B recommended). Recommended brands: PITT, or Generals Brand JUMBO COMPRESSED CHARCOAL (rectangular and flat shaped) type—soft.
  • • 1 bottle BLACK Drawing Ink. The drawing ink brands I recommend are Dick Blick brand, sumi ink, or Speedball (do NOT purchase Higgins or Winsor & Newton inks, they’re too weak in pigment).
  • • 1 WHITE PLASTIC ERASER–STAEDLER / MARS BRAND is best.
  • • 1 Small CHAMOIS
  • • 2 LARGE CLIPS to hold paper to your board. I recommend extra-large black binder clips found at office supply stores.
  • • 1 medium or large ROUND BAMBOO BRUSH. Or, a large watercolor round brush if you already own one.
  • • 1 LARGE PLASTIC CONTAINER to hold water for drawing ink (quart size yogurt containers work great)
  • • 2 SMALL PLASTIC CONTAINERS for ink washes (cups or jars)—with lids are best (or just bring one large lidded jar to keep and transport home ink washes).
  • • DRAWING BOARD, around 30X40”. Half-inch thick Foam Core Board is highly recommended. These are available at art stores pre-cut. They are very durable, inexpensive, and lightweight. (Note, do not purchase GatorBoard)
  • • Soft pastels will be used toward the end of the course. I will review choices for these during class. No need to purchase them early.
