Experience serenity of expression through the techniques of sumi painting. Students will explore creative forms of self-expression using sumi (black ink) to interpret images as well as changes in color through tonal value. Use of traditional tools, materials, brush methods, and approach to content as well as the mounting process will be taught. Students will be introduced also to Asian brush calligraphy, the ancient art form from which sumi-e (the ancient eastern tradition of self-expression through sumi painting) evolved, and will become familiar with the secrets of sumi-e. You will learn brushwork through studying the Four Paragons (the four traditional subjects of bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom and branch).
