Are you a representational painter who wants to push your work towards abstraction? This abstract painting class is for you! You will approach each day with a new strategy to get you thinking differently about the way you paint your subjects. Add new methods to your toolbox including using a palette knife for a brush to increase speed and immediacy. This class is perfect for all levels and styles of painters. Students may work in your painting media of choice, instructor will be using oils.

  • Supply List for Moving Towards Abstraction workshop – Julie Devine
  • •Apron to protect clothes
  • •Oil paints in tubes (Professional oil paint is best, but Gamblin student grade is okay)
  • •A warm and cool of red, yellow, and blue: for example: cadmium red light, quinacridone magenta, Indian yellow, cadmium lemon yellow, ultramarine blue, Prussian blue
  • • Earth tones: Burnt sienna, raw umber, yellow ochre
  • • Large tube of titanium white
  • • Odorless mineral spirits (OMS)
  • • Linseed oil
  • • Gamblin solvent-free gel – optional to experiment with as a non-toxic solvent replacement

  • • Bristle brushes in the 2-6 size range. At least one of each shape: round, filbert, flat/bright
  • • Palette knives
  • • Pad of palette paper or a palette of your choice
  • • Pad of canvas pad or Arches paper for oil paint

  • • Several panels or canvas in this size range in any assortment (11 x 14, 12 x 12, 16 x 20”)

  • • paper towels
  • • optional: wet panel carrier – or empty pizza boxes to transport wet panels
  • • olive or safflower oil for cleaning brushes and skin
