Working from portrait models and self-portraits, study the essential techniques and concepts of proportion, line, value, volume, structure and composition. Focus on the basic concepts of drawing applied to the human form and learn to think visually, translating what you see into a compelling portrait using simple techniques.
Spring quarter 2020 classes will be held online.

  • 17x14 White sketch paper (I recommend Aquabee Super Deluxe)
  • 17x14 Rough Newsprint paper
  • 2 Hard Charcoal pencils
  • 2 Medium Charcoal pencils
  • 2 Soft Charcoal pencils
  • 1 2B, 1 HB, 1 2H and 1 4B graphite pencils (4 total)
  • 5 pieces of vine charcoal
  • 1 Exacto knife
  • 1 Sandpaper pad ‘pointer’ for sharpening pencils
  • 1 compressed charcoal stick
  • Large paper stump
  • Kneaded erasure
