Through the works of El Greco and Alice Neel this class will explore Byzantine, Mannerist and Modern concepts of abstracting the figure. You will make two paintings, beginning in the manner of El Greco and then in the manner of Alice Neel’s expressive portraits. El Greco’s work is rooted a spiritual reality, departing from this earthly space with elongated figures who seem to float in air defying gravity. El Greco’s concepts will be discussed as you abstract the figure from a live model. Alice Neel’s portrait paintings have many crossovers with El Greco’s in the way Neel abstracts her models and flattens space. This second painting will also be made from a live model exploring Neel’s concepts and techniques of figurative abstraction. Oil or Acrylic Paint. Painting experience recommended.

  • · FOR OIL PAINTERS: use a 50/50 traditional painting medium. Mix equal parts GAMSOL and either Linseed or Stand OIL. Put this into a plastic squeeze bottle to dispense into your mixes on the palette as you work. The squeeze bottles keep the medium clean and reduce fumes.
