Trois crayon is a historic combination of three materials — charcoal, white chalk, and red conté — that when woven together can capture beautiful warmth and depth in a human face. Discover the fundamentals of observational drawing by working with photos of professional models and anatomy references. Topics covered will include proportions, comparative measurement, composition, and basic principles of form rendering. Lectures and demonstrations will be held on live on Zoom for a maximum of 2.5 hours/day. The instructor will use the remainder of class to answer questions, work alongside students, and provide individual critiques via digital drawing tools.
Spring quarter 2020 classes will be held online.

  • Toned drawing paper, 3 sheets of 11x14 inch or larger.
  • My recommendation is tan/beige or blue/grey in color. Ideally, the paper is medium-smooth in texture, no less than 80 lbs weight, and dedicated as “drawing” or “pastel” paper. Suggested brands: Strathmore Toned Tan Sketch Paper, Canson Mi-teintes Pastel Sheet in Felt Grey (sold in 19x25 inch sheets) or any similar paper from Stonehenge or Hahnemuhle. It’s artist’s choice!
  • Vine charcoal sticks: Winsor Newton, Grumbacher or Nitram - soft or medium
  • General’s compressed charcoal pencil - medium
  • Red (sanguine) conté - 2 sticks
  • Pitt pastel pencil (Venetian red) - #190
  • Pitt pastel pencil (white) - #101
  • General’s white chalk pencil
  • Soft brush - about 1 inch wide, flat or fan shape. (Watercolor brushes or makeup brushes work well.)
  • kneaded eraser
  • measuring stick (thin knitting needle or kabob skewer work well)
  • Exacto knife + blades
  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • Artist’s tape
  • Drawing board
  • Optional:
  • pencil box or equivalent storage container for supplies
  • Chamois or paper towels
  • paper blending stump
  • glassine paper
  • artwork portfolio for transporting drawings
  • Easel or table top
  • Paper towels
  • • microphone and camera enabled computer
  • • ipad or smart tablet
  • • smart phone (android or IOS)
  • • Strong internet connection
  • Excited Attitude!
