More than ever before comics are gaining acceptance into the fine art world, and serving as educational tools in all kinds of schools and institutions. No one knows this better than Seattle artist Gina Siciliano, whose graphic novel I Know What I Am: the Life and Times of Artemisia Gentileschi was published by Fantagraphics last fall. Siciliano's comics about the Italian Renaissance were displayed alongside the Seattle Art Museum's 'Flesh and Blood' exhibition, and most of her work is made with only the simple ball-point pen. For this workshop Siciliano will be sharing insight on creating non-fiction/historical comics-- choosing important subjects, setting deadlines, doing research, working in different mediums (including ball-point pen), balancing text with images, using source materials, and designing engaging, beautiful pages that draw viewers in. Students will look at and discuss a variety of examples, plus work on setting up and beginning their own comics.
Spring quarter 2020 classes will be held online.
